Fire department reports that crew safely evacuated from burning ship at San Pedro
Los Angeles Fire Department reported that all crew members were evacuated Friday from a ship in flames at San Pedro Port after an explosion disrupted the power supply and crane operations.
LAFD reported that around 8:27 pm (0427 GMT), the remaining crew members had been helped off the vessel. This brought the total number of safely evacuated crew to 23, with no injuries. Six crew members were previously missing.
The port has identified hazardous materials in multiple bays. Firefighters are using protective gear, including self-contained respirators.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass posted on X that "First Responders are on scene, with over 100 firefighters working on suppressing the fire and Port Police working to assist crew to safety."
LAFD monitors air quality while fire suppression continues, she said.
The LAFD reported that marine units are continuing to cool the exterior of the ship, and no one is allowed below deck. (Reporting and editing by William Mallard, Tom Hogue and Rajveer Pardesi from Bengaluru)
