French Navy chief: China needs to be more involved in Strait of Hormuz discussions

Posted to Maritime Reporter on April 1, 2026

France's Navy Chief said that China may 'at some point' have to take a more direct role in re-establishing?traffic flows? through the Strait of Hormuz, because its number of ships is probably insufficient.

"We have not seen the Chinese navy intervene to reopen this strait. There is a direct 'political' dialogue between Chinese and Iranian officials to allow a certain number vessels through. Will this be enough to restore normal traffic flow? "I don't think so",?Admiral Nicolas Vaujour said at the War and?Peace?security conference held in Paris.

"China will have to 'engage more directly in the discussion and'show its impatience with the fact that the strait is still closed. (Reporting and editing by Dominique Vidalon).
