Infantino: FIFA will help Gaza rebuild its football infrastructure
Following the peace summit held in Egypt on Monday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino promised to support efforts to rebuild the football infrastructure in Gaza. This is part of a larger post-war reconstruction effort.
Infantino attended the meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh, a resort on the Red Sea.
Infantino stated that it was important that FIFA be present to support, help, assist, and ensure that the peace process is successful.
The FIFA President said that his organization would help restore the sport in Gaza and other Palestinian territories. This included rebuilding of facilities destroyed by Israel's military operations, which killed over 67,000 people. It also launched a fund for new pitches and youth programs.
He said that football's role is to provide hope, support and unity.
"We will rebuild all of the football facilities in Gaza. We will bring football together with the Palestinian Football Association and create opportunities for kids through the game."
Infantino said that FIFA will contribute by providing mini-pitch and "FIFA Arenas", and invited other partners to join in the effort. He added, "football is very, very important. It brings hope to children". (Reporting and editing by Ed Osmond, Julien Pretot)
