Julio Rodriguez, Mariners push past sinking Twins
The Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Tuesday in Minneapolis, thanks to Julio Rodriguez's two runs and a game-breaking sacrifice fly.
Donovan Solano, who also scored two runs in Seattle's third consecutive win, was the other player to contribute. Cal Raleigh was 2-for-4, with a double and a RBI. However, he did not hit a home run for the first time since five games.
Ryan Jeffers led Minnesota in the batting order with a double and two RBIs. Kody Clemens hit a home run for the Twins who have lost 11 of their last 12 games.
Andres Munoz, Mariners' right-hander (3-0), earned the victory with a scoreless relief inning. Jhoan Duran, the Twins' right-hander (4-3), gave up just one run in an inning.
Matt Brash, a right-handed pitcher for the Mariners, pitched a scoreless nineth to earn his season's first save.
In the ninth inning, with bases loaded and only one out, the score was even at 5-5. He hit a fly ball deep to the right field warning track for the game-winning sacrifice fly.
The Mariners took a 5-0 advantage in the top third.
Rodriguez opened the scoring by driving in Ben Williamson with a sacrifice to the right. Raleigh scored a run in his next at-bat, making it 2-0.
Luke Raley was able to score another run after a pitch hit him. Solano finished the big inning by hitting a two-run center single.
Clemens' eighth homer was the first hit of the bottom third inning for the Twins.
The Twins added four runs in the fourth to bring the score level.
Trevor Larnach scored after Brooks Lee singled to the left. Three batters after that, Ty France grounded into double play when the bases were loaded with no one out except Lee.
Jeffers, who had walked Clemens in his next at-bat to erase the deficit, hit a two run double left.
