Merz pledges German contribution to Hormuz mission, says US input 'desirable'

Posted to Maritime Reporter on April 17, 2026

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated 'on Friday' that his country was "prepared" to contribute a mission that would ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that input from the United States is also "desirable."

Merz, along with his counterparts in France, Britain, and Italy, said that he needed a decision from 'the federal government', a mandate by the German Bundestag, and a "sound military concept" at a meeting held in Paris. He added that this might include reconnaissance and mine clearance.

We will also, if possible, like to see the United States of America take part in these discussions. "We believe that this would be desirable," he said. (Reporting and Editing by Linda Pasquini, Friederike Heine)
