Russian LNG tanker changes route after attack on similar vessel off Libya

Posted to Maritime Reporter on March 5, 2026

LSEG ship tracking data showed that a 'tanker' carrying liquefied natural -gas from Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 plant diverted away from the Mediterranean Sea and sailed around Africa after an attack this week which sank a'similar Russian vessel near Libya.

According to data, the tanker Buran changed its route after the Arctic Metagaz sank on Wednesday. It is currently located off the coast of 'Africa's northwest coast.

Russia said that Ukrainian drones were responsible for the attack on Arctic Metagaz, launched from Libya. They called it a terrorist act. Ukraine has not yet commented on the incident.

In the summer, gas carriers carrying cargoes from Arctic LNG 2 usually sail via the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal to export to China.

According to LSEG, another Russian 'LNG tanker', the Arctic Pioneer is currently near Egypt’s Port Said. Mark Trevelyan/Guy Faulconbridge (Reporting and Editing)
