RWE CEO does not see the need to write down a major US offshore project
RWE is the No.2 offshore wind developer in the world. RWE, the world's No.
Markus Krebber, a journalist, told reporters that the so-called Community Offshore Wind Project, in which RWE holds a 73%-27% share with Britain's National Grid and has not been invested, had been put on hold.
Donald Trump has put offshore wind in his crosshairs. His administration has taken several measures to stop or prevent the construction of projects near the U.S. coastline. Trump has called wind turbines "garbage" before.
The U.S. has ordered Denmark's Orsted, the largest player in the offshore wind industry, to stop the construction of an offshore wind project near Rhode Island.
Krebber stated that "we have pulled the plug" on Community Offshore Wind. He reiterated earlier remarks that construction had not started yet.
Krebber stated that he did not see the need to write off the project. The book value is 800 million euros ($937 millions). He added that if the political opposition against the sector continued, it could be a matter before the courts as lease payments had been made in previous years.
Krebber stated that if the opportunity to invest is not realized, we should discuss the lease payments.
It is not possible that the federal government will say, "I'll allow you to build in my waters offshore, but I'll ask you for payments in return", and then, after the payments are made, they'll tell you, "It's now impossible".
Krebber said that RWE has no interest in taking over offshore wind projects in Japan from which Mitsubishi is pulling out.
