Tanger Med Port in Morocco said Monday that it would maintain its position as the Mediterranean's and Africa's largest port by handling 11.1 million containers by 2025. This is an increase of 8.4% from a year ago.

In a press release, the port authority stated that the growth was partially due to the expansion of APM Terminals' terminal.

Port traffic grew?3.6%, to 535.203 units. This was due to increased exports of industrial goods and agri-food products.

The number of passengers using the port in 2025 to enter or leave Morocco increased by 5.7%. Cars crossing into or leaving Morocco from the port reached 895.341 vehicles, an increase of 5%.

The port authority reported that the number of vehicles exported from the port fell by 12%, to 526 862. Most were produced in the country at the Renault and Stellantis factories.

According to official trade statistics, Morocco's automotive sales fell by 2% to $17 billion last year but still remained its largest export.

It said that the port handled 161 million tonnes of cargo in 2025. This is an increase of 13.3% over 2024.

Last week, Morocco announced that it would begin operating Nador West Med in the fourth quarter this year, its second Mediterranean deep-sea?port.

The facility, which will cost $5.6 billion, will have a capacity of up to 12 millions containers per year.

Morocco is also building a deepwater port worth $1 billion in Dakhla in Western Sahara, further south along the Atlantic coast. (Reporting and editing by Susan Fenton; Ahmed El Jechtimi)
