According to Tanker Trackers, Iran has released the St. Nikolas tanker, which is a Greek owned Suezmax that it had seized in 2024.

Iranian state media reported that Iran had seized the tanker - which was carrying Iraqi oil destined for Turkey - in revenge for the U.S. seizure of the same vessel & its oil 2023.

The U.S. seize of St. Nikolas is part of an enforcement of sanctions operation. The ship was under a different alias at the time, Suez Rajan. Iran warned the U.S. that its actions would not "go unanswered".

The owner of the ship could not be contacted immediately. The manager of the ship did not respond immediately to requests for comment. Reporting by Parisa hafezi, Lisa Baertlein and Arathy somasekhar; Editing and proofreading by Nia Williams, Lisa Shumaker and Lisa Shumaker
