Trump creates office for shipbuilding and offers tax incentives

Posted to Maritime Reporter on March 5, 2025

On Tuesday, U.S. president Donald Trump informed Congress that his administration would create a shipbuilding office in the White House as well as offer new tax incentives to the sector.

In a late-night address on Tuesday, Trump announced that he would create a new shipbuilding office in the White House. He also offered special tax incentives.

The Wall Street Journal had reported earlier that Trump's administration was preparing a executive order to revive U.S. shipbuilding, and reduce Chinese dominance in the global maritime industry.

According to the newspaper, the order contains 18 measures including a fee increase on Chinese-built cranes and ships entering the U.S.

China is the largest container ship producer in the world.

The former U.S. president Joe Biden’s administration concluded that China uses unfair policies and practices in order to dominate the global maritime and shipbuilding sectors.

China rejected U.S. claims and claimed that the American government blamed China for their own problems.

As a result of a rare bipartisan agreement on the importance of supporting U.S. Shipbuilding, the U.S. has criticized China for its aggressive industrial policies. China denies any wrongdoing.

In recent years, Sino-U.S. ties have been strained over a variety of issues, including import tariffs and technological advances, as well as human rights, Taiwan's self-determination, Hong Kong security measures, and TikTok ownership.
