Kirby Buys Towboats, Barges from Coastal

Kirby Corp. signed an asset purchase agreement with Coastal Towing, Inc. to purchase from Coastal seven black oil tank barges and 13 inland towboats. The transaction, estimated at $17.1 million in cash, is being financed through Kirby's operating cash flow and available credit under Kirby's bank revolving credit agreement. Kirby and Coastal have also entered into a Barge Management Agreement whereby Kirby will serve as manager of the combined black oil tank barge fleet, which will include Coastal's 51 remaining barges and Kirby's 65 barges, for a period of seven years. In a related transaction, on September 25, 2002, Kirby purchased from Coastal three black oil tank barges for $1.8 million in cash. Coastal is engaged in the inland tank barge transportation of black oil products along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River. The ten tank barges purchased by Kirby and the 51 tank barges to be managed constitute all of Coastal's active tank barge fleet. Transported black oil products include products such as asphalt, No. 6 fuel oil, coker feed, vacuum gas oil, crude oil and ship bunkers (ship engine fuel). Black oil products volumes represent approximately 10% of Kirby's marine transportation segment's revenue. The remaining 90 percent of marine transportation revenue historically consists of approximately 60 percent petrochemical volumes, 20 percent refined petroleum products volumes and 10 percent agricultural chemical volumes

McDonough Launch First of Seven Spud Barges

McDonough Marine Service has launched the first in a series of seven new inland spud barges. The spud barges are being constructed at Yager Marine Industries in Owensboro, Kentucky and range from 110’ to 140’ in length. American Electric Power Co. Inc. signed a definitive agreement with Progress Energy Inc. to buy its MEMCO Barge Line Inc. for $270 million, in a deal AEP said would immediately add to its earnings. Kirby Corporation Purchases Tank Barges

Kirby Corporation announced the purchase of the stock of Coastal Towing, Inc., the owner of 37 inland black oil tank barges, for approximately $19.3m. Kirby has been operating the Coastal tank barges since October 2002 under a barge management agreement. Kirby also announced the purchase of 21 tank barges from Cypress Barge Leasing, LLC for $15m in cash. USCG Issues Upper Mississippi Safety Advisory

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a safety advisory for a 24-mile stretch of the upper-Mississippi River near St. Louis due to high water conditions. From mile marker 160, near the mouth of the Meramec River south of St. Louis to mile marker 184 near St. Louis, vessels were advised against downstreaming operations. Crowley Selects Fuel Supplier for LNG Containerships

Crowley Puerto Rico Services, Inc. has selected Eagle LNG Partners as the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-supplier for the company’s new LNG-powered, Commitment Class ships, which will be delivered in 2017 for use in the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico trade. Shell Trading Rotterdam BV (Shell) has signed a time-charter agreement with Plouvier Transport NV and Intertrans Tankschiffahrt AG for 15 new inland dual-fuel barges, which will predominantly run on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).   The barges, built by the Dutch shipyard VEKA Shipbuilding BV, will support Shell’s business in trading and transporting mineral oil products in the ARA (Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp) and Rhinetrack (Germany/Switzerland) regions.  

Near-Record Volume for Burns Harbor Port

The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor handled 2.8 million tons of cargo in 2015, the second highest tonnage in over two decades. Following 2014's all-time record volume, the year marked only the third time the port handled 2.8 million tons or more in the port's 45-year history.   Increased shipments of heavy-lift project cargoes (up 96 percent), carbon products (up 37 percent), limestone (up nearly 12 percent) and oils (up 72 percent) helped drive the increased volume.  

Kirby Buys Seacor’s Inland Tank Barge Fleet

 Kirby Corporation has agreed to purchase the inland tank barge fleet of SEACOR Holdings Inc. from subsidiaries of Seacor for approximately $88 million in cash. The asset purchase will consist of 27 inland 30,000 barrel tank barges and 13 inland towboats, plus one 30,000 barrel tank barge and one towboat currently under construction. Also, as part of the agreement, Kirby will transfer to Seacor the ownership of one Florida-based ship docking tugboat.

West Calcasieu Port to Undergo Waterfront Upgrade

West Calcasieu Port officials have awarded a $1.6 million construction contract to Orion Marine Construction, Inc. for the replacement of bulkheading along the port’s waterfront on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.   “The West Cal Port Board of Commissioners was impressed with the strong interest and participation in the highly competitive bidding process on the part of the marine construction industry,” said West Calcasieu Port Director Lynn Hohensee
