Agencies Reach Accord on Managing Long Island Sound Dredged Materials

Six government agencies tasked with regulating dredging activities in Long Island Sound have reached accord on a process to support the goal of reducing or eliminating open water disposal of dredged materials into the Sound while maintaining the economic viability of New York and Connecticut's working ports. The agreement ratifies the intent of three federal and three state agencies to formally administer a Regional Dredging Team to comply with the June 3, 2005, rulemaking by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA) that designated open-water dredged material disposal sites in Central Long Island Sound (CLIS) and Western Long Island Sound (WLIS). The establishment of the Regional Dredging Team will assist dredging proponents in considering and evaluating various management options for their dredged] material while a larger effort to develop a Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP) for Long Island Sound is being conducted. The agreement covers dredging projects in both New York State and Connecticut waters. The agencies establishing the agreement are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and New York State Department of State. Ellicott Dredges Bags Three US Govt Contracts

Ellicott Dredges announced it was recently awarded three contracts with the U.S. government.   The first contract is for a customized Ellicott 860SL Swinging Dragon dredge and support boat for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). This dredge will be used to increase depth and restore water flow in the Colorado River, and to create wetland habitats. One of the primary objectives of this program is multi-species conservation, including birds, fish, turtles, insects and plants.  

Ellicott Announces New Dredging Technology

Ellicott International offers details on a new type of dredge which actually walks by itself. The dredge moves on three moving spuds or traveling carriages enabling it to remain in exact position at all times because there are always two spuds firmly anchored in the bottom. Corps of Engineers Hopper Dredge Report

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released the report that it submitted to Congress on its Hopper Dredge Fleet. The Corps owns and operates four hopper dredges. The report recommends that one dredge be retired and another one be kept in ready reserve status. A newly built 60-meter trailing suction hopper dredger Tommy Norton started work to deliver safe and reliable ocean access for the commercial vessels, oil and gas suppliers and commercial fishing fleet that cross the entrance bar to the Gippsland Lakes area.   The dredger is the first built by Damen Shipyards Group for Australia, and features propulsion is provided by two SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers type SRP 330 fixed pitch.

New Cutter Dredger Launched for Jan De Nul

A newly built self-propelled cutter suction dredger, Willem van Rubroeck, was released into the sea at the Uljanik Shipyard in Croatia on August 28. The vessel is expected to be delivered to owner Jan De Nul Group in 2018.   The vessel is 151.3 m long, 36 m wide and can reach speeds up to 12 knots.    Willem van Rubroeck’s installed power is 40,975 kW, making it the world’s most powerful cutter dredger, according to Jan De Nul Group

ATB Tug Launched for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock

A new ATB tug for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD), M/V Douglas B. Mackie, was launched in Mobile, Ala. World Marine Wins Bid to Repair USACE Dredger

DEME Names Second LNG-fueled Dredger

 The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Scheldt River was officially named  at the DEME head office in Zwijndrecht, Belgium. The dredger was named by Veerle Hegge, the wife of Bart De Wever, Mayor of Antwerp.   The 8,400 m³ Scheldt River is the second dredger in the DEME fleet equipped with dual fuel engines. The highly innovative vessel can operate in LNG mode, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, almost eliminating sulphur, NOx and particle emissions

New Dredger Delivered to Saudi Arabia

Suez Canal Orders Two Cutter Suction Dredgers

The Egyptian Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has placed an order for two custom-built 29,190kW heavy-duty rock cutter suction dredgers (CSDs).   SCA has signed a contract with Royal IHC for the design and construction of two CSDs, which will be built in The Netherlands and are expected to be delivered in 2020   The vessels will have an overall length of 147.4 meters and provide a maximum dredging depth of 35 meters. In addition, they will offer accommodation facilities for 73 people
