Carbon Fibre Megayacht Launched from Picchiotti Shipyard

Perini Navi Group launch a carbon fibre sloop designed by Nauta Yacht Design & built at the Picchiotti shipyard in La Spezia, Italy The Perini Navi Group,  designers and constructors of large sailing and motor yachts, announce that the 31,65m sloop Xnoi (pronounced per noi - “for us”) has been launched. This sailing yacht has a hull, superstructure, mast and boom and all are in carbon fibre. The launching ceremony was held recently at the Picchiotti shipyard in La Spezia.
 The construction of this new yacht – designed by Nauta Yacht Design’s Mario Pedol and Massimo Gino – meets the changing needs of today’s yachting market and expands the range of Perini Navi Group products. This project demonstrates the Perini Navi Group’s ability to successfully undertake construction projects in carbon fibre. 
 The Perini Navi Group’s core business is the construction of sailing yachts of 45 to 70m, a Racing Line and a Fast Cruising Line, special projects, and motor yachts from the Picchiotti Vitruvius® series. Xnoi will be available for charter this summer for up to 10 guests in 4 staterooms in the Mediterranean Sea.

CMA CGM Launches New Asia-W. Africa Service

CMA CGM Group launched a new direct service linking Asia to West Africa, effective August 3, 2011. Named WAX II, this new service will be operated in partnership with CSAV and will deploy 10 vessels from 2,500 TEUs up to 3,100 TEUs (5 CMA CGM vessels, 5 CSAV vessels). It will serve China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Cameroon.  This service will enable the Group to provide its customers with the following advantages:

Subsidiaries of ExxonMobil, Onassis Group, Goulandris Group Launch Double-hull Tanker

Exxon Mobil Corp. announced that M/T Kestrel, a new double-hull very large crude oil carrier (VLCC), was delivered for leasing to a Trust established by Marcare Shipping Co., a joint shipping venture among subsidiaries of ExxonMobil, the Onassis Group and Petros J. Goulandris Sons Group. Kestrel, the second of two sister vessels to be leased to the Marcare Trust, will be chartered by International Marine Transportation Limited (IMT), a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation based in the UK.

Vessels: Manitowoc Group Launches Another Cutter

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. launched the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder, the last ship in a series of 16 seagoing buoy tenders being built at Manitowoc's Marinette Marine subsidiary. This 225-ft, Juniper-class vessel is part of a series of contracts that were awarded to Marinette in 1993 and 1998. "Alder is a highly sophisticated cutter that will help the U.S. Coast Guard's homeland security efforts and other missions," said Dennis McCloskey, president of Manitowoc's Marine Group

Computer Game By Maersk to Spark Interest in Science

  This week the Maersk Group launches a computer game and teaching materials about oil exploration and oil production for Danish secondary schools, technical colleges and higher preparatory examination courses. The materials are available free of charge. More than 340,000 players have already tried the oil exploration game via www.QuestforOil.com. The game provides an insight into the global oil industry and the various elements of oil exploration

This month Damen Shipyards Group launched ice class Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers TSHD 2000 for Russian Port Agency FSUE “Rosmorport”.   Song Thu Corporation shipyard in Da Nang, Vietnam is building the Damen TSHD 2000 under Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS). Following delivery, the 2,000 m³ Severnaya Dvina will maintain navigational depths and provide safe shipping in the Arkhangelsk Seaport basin and approaches.

Russia Launches Syria Submarine Strikes

 Russian media reports that a Russian diesel-electric submarine operating submerged in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday launched Kalibr cruise missiles at  Islamic State terrorists’ (ISIL) vital facilities for first time in Syria.   Agence France-Presse, citing Russian news agencies, reported that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the military had launched strikes in Syria for the first time from a submarine stationed in the Mediterranean.

Statoil Selects Gas4Sea for LNG Bunkering in Rotterdam

Gas4Sea partners - ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK - have been selected by Norwegian multinational energy group Statoil to be their liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine fuel supplier in the port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, for four crude shuttle tankers.   The four planned dual fuel vessels are to come into service in early 2020 and will be operated by Statoil in Northern European seas.   Gas4Sea will supply LNG using the ENGIE Zeebrugge which started operations earlier

Industry Task Force Pushes for Decarbonization Urgency

Global Maritime Forum, Carbon War Room, the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC), and University College London (UCL) has announced the launch of a Task Force on Decarbonizing Shipping. This industry-led initiative will develop tangible pathways for shipping’s decarbonization through five working groups, each focussed on a key area of the industry. Outcomes of the task force will be presented at the Global Maritime Forum’s inaugural summit in October 2018.

Daly Joins Sea Machines as COO

Boston-based smart ship technology company Sea Machines Robotics has hired Jim Daly as Chief Operating Officer.   Daly was previously Chief Operating Officer and an early member of the leadership team at Rethink Robotics, where he scaled operations from technology concept through first and second-generation products. He most recently led the Sawyer robot product development project from conception through design, launch and global customer deployment

Damen to Open Novorossiysk Service Hub

Damen Shipyards Group said it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Delo Group of companies, establishing plans to open a service hub in the Russian port of Novorossiysk.   According to Damen, the new hub will aim to optimize the services provided to the growing number of Damen vessels operating in the region in addition to strengthening its relationship with the Delo Group.   The LOI was signed by representatives from the two companies during the NEVA 2017 trade fair in Saint

Scottish Fund to Train Seafarers

 Businesses in Scotland that contribute to the Apprenticeship Levy can now apply for a workforce development grant of up to GBP 10,000, which the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) says could open up opportunities for seafarers.    The Scottish Government this month launched the Flexible Workforce Development Fund (FWDF), which aims to help pay for employee training to up-skill and re-skill companies' existing workforces through one of Scotland's further education colleges.

 With effect from 26 September 2017, Wilhelmsen increases its shareholding in NorSea Group from 40% to approximately 72%.  NorSea Group provides supply bases and integrated logistics solutions to the offshore industry.   Eidesvik Eiendomsinvest AS and Simon Møkster Eiendom AS will hold approximately 12% each, while management in NorSea Group controls the remaining 4%. Following the transaction, Wilhelmsen will buy a small portion of management controlled shares.

Hawaii Stevedores Commits Kapalama Container Terminal

 Honolulu-based Hawaii Stevedores, Inc. has received confirmation from Hawaii State Department of Transportation (HDOT) that, together with the state, Hawaii Stevedores will continue the joint development of the Kapalama Container Terminal (KCT).   The state has confirmed its commitment for Hawaii Stevedores to lease the new 84-acre, state-of-the-art KCT, which will be constructed at the former Kapalama Military Reserve Terminal at Sand Island in Honolulu

Fincantieri to Build a Cruise Ship for Cunard

Fincantieri and Carnival Corporation & plc announced today the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for the construction of one next-generation cruise ship for luxury brand Cunard.   The agreement will become operational when all the financial and technical conditions will be satisfied, the shipbuilder said.   The ship will be built at the Monfalcone yard and join the Cunard’s fleet in 2022

Iridium NEXT Successful Third Launch

Iridium Communications has announced the successful third launch and deployment of 10 Iridium NEXT satellites.   The satellites were delivered into low-Earth orbit approximately one hour after a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 5:37 a.m. PDT. With two successful launches having already been completed this year, this third batch of 10 satellites brings the total number of Iridium NEXT satellites in orbit to 30
