Corvus to Power Hybrid Fish Farm Processing Vessel

Corvus Energy has been selected by Wärtsilä as the supplier of a lithium ion based energy storage system (ESS) for the world’s first full service hybrid fish farm processing and transport vessel. The Orca Energy ESS from Corvus will supply electrical power to the vessel's propulsion system to enable environmentally-friendly and lower cost operations. Wärtsilä has been contracted to deliver the ship design and hybrid propulsion system for the vessel to be built at the Balenciaga shipyard in Spain, on behalf of Hav Line AS of Norway. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in summer 2018. The Wärtsilä hybrid propulsion system utilizing the Orca ESS from Corvus benefits both the environment and the ship owner through the reduction of emissions and operating costs.

NYK Orders Three LNG Carriers

 Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has concluded time-charters for two new LNG carriers with Diamond Gas International, a Singapore affiliate of Mitsubishi Corporation.   NYK also concluded a contract with MI LNG Company Limited for the construction of the LNG carriers, the company said in its press release.   The ships will haul gas from the Cameron LNG (liquefied natural gas)  project in Louisiana in the US to Asia, primarily Japan.

Wärtsilä Tests Wireless Charging for Hybrid Coastal Ferry

Wärtsilä informs it has tested its automatic wireless induction charging system on a hybrid powered commercial coastal ferry, the first in the world operating with high power wireless charging capability for its batteries.   The tests were carried out in Norwegian during the end of August and early September on the 85 meter long MF Folgefonn owned by Norled, one of Norway's largest ferry operators waters.

 At the international maritime exhibition Nor-Shipping in Oslo from May 30 to June 2 2017, MTU, part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, presented its propulsion and systems portfolio, primarily for offshore supply vessels, workboats and ferries. This included Series 2000, 4000 and 8000 propulsion engines in an output range from 400 to 10,000 kW, hybrid propulsion solutions and diesel electric propulsion systems and diesel gensets for the supply of on-board power.  

MAN Diesel & Turbo to Buy 40% Stake in Aspin Kemp

Glosten Designs Hybrid Ferry for Kitsap Transit

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to deliver the ship design for a new processing and transportation vessel to be built at the Balenciaga shipyard in Spain on behalf of Hav Line AS of Norway. In addition to the design, Wärtsilä will also supply an integrated solution comprising a 10-cylinder Wärtsilä 31 main engine, auxiliary engines, propulsion machinery, the propulsion remote control system, and the electrical and automation system.  

Project to Build World’s Biggest Sailing Cargo Ship

Lloyd's Register (LR) has joined the Quadriga sustainable shipping project – an initiative from Hamburg-based Sailing Cargo, which aims to build the world’s biggest sailing cargo ship.   The project outlines a plan to build a 170-meter car carrier, capable of carrying between 1,700 and 2,000 cars, which will be equipped with four DynaRig masts and will operate on hybrid propulsion with sails and diesel-electric engines, and an optional battery system for peak loads

Glosten to Design Electric Ferry for Skagit County

Washington’s Skagit County has selected Seattle based naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy Glosten to design a new all-electric vehicle/passenger ferry.   The new ferry will replace M/V Guemes, which has provided service between Anacortes and Guemes Island, Wash. since 1979, and is now nearing the end of its economic useful life.
