Metal Shark Makes Multiple Latin American, Caribbean Deliveries

Louisiana-based boatbuilder Metal Shark has announced several new contracts with Latin American and Caribbean operators, further expanding the company’s presence in the region. At a recent ceremony with Puerto Rico’s Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla in San Juan, the Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) officially commissioned its first three Metal Shark 36-foot Fearless-class center console patrol boats. The welded-aluminum offshore center console vessels have been designed to operate at speed in the large ocean swells prevalent off the Puerto Rican coastline. Featuring high performance ventilated stepped-bottom running surfaces and powered by triple 300-horsepower Mercury Verado engines, the PRPD’s new patrol boats achieve speeds up to 55 knots. Additional vessels for the PRPD are currently in production at Metal Shark’s Jeanerette, La. production facility. Metal Shark has also announced the Colombian National Police (CNP) as a new customer. After working closely with the agency through an extensive standardization process earlier this year, Metal Shark recently delivered the CNP its first new 33-foot Relentless-class patrol boat. Special features of this welded aluminum center console vessel include a urethane-sheathed closed-cell foam Wing collar, Shockwave S2-Corbin high-backed shock-mitigating seating for five, and additional fold-away crew seating in the bow

Metal Shark Wins USN PB(X) Contract

Metal Shark won the contract to produce the U.S. Navy’s next-generation patrol boat, the PB(X), the replacement for the fleet of force protection boats currently in use with Navy Expeditionary Combad Command’s Coastal Riverine Forces (CRF). Subject to annual appropriations, the Navy intends to replace approximately 100 to 160 of its existing 25-ft. and 34-ft. CRF patrol boats with the larger and more modern PB(X) platform over the next 15 years.

Six new military patrol boats built by Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark have been delivered to the Vietnam Coast Guard. The welded-aluminum Metal Shark 45-foot Defiant pilothouse patrol vessels were provided to Vietnam by the United States in a move that underscores the increased security cooperation between the two nations. The vessels were officially handed over by U.S. Ambassador Ted Osius to the Vietnam Coast Guard on Monday in the province of Quang Nam.

Rendall Joins The Shearer Group

Naval architect Ryan Rendall has joined the naval architecture, marine engineering and marine surveying firm The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI).   Prior to joining TSGI, Rendall worked for Metal Shark Boats as a naval architect and marine engineer. He received a B.S. in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers and the Marine Technology Society

Metal Shark Delivers First Response Boat to Coast Guard

Metal Shark Boats this week delivered the first new Response Boat-Small (RB-S) II to the U.S. Coast Guard's Special Missions Training Center at Camp LeJune, North Carolina.   Designed to gradually replace the Defender-class RB-S as it reaches the end of its service life, the vessel is the first of 38 boats scheduled for delivery to the Coast Guard by April 2013.   RB-S II's flexibility as a multi-function platform makes it ideal for use across the Coast Guard's full mission

Horizon Delivers Second NYC Ferry Newbuild

Alabama shipbuilder Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. said it has delivered the second of 13 NYC Ferry vessels being built for NYC Ferry Operated by Hornblower, which will launch this summer.   With sea trials and U.S. Coast Guard certification now behind her, H201 will get a final cleanup and the Hornblower crew will begin the nearly 1,900-mile journey from Horizon’s yard to New York City.   The first ferry, H200, arrived in New York Harbor on Sunday morning

USS America Pulls into Changi Naval Base

DSC Delivers Its First Tier 4 Final Dredge

In February 2017, DSC Dredge, based in Reserve, La., delivered its first-ever dredge equipped with a Tier 4 Final C32 ACERT Caterpillar engine to a minerals company located in the U.S. The Shark Class Dredge features an 18-inch hull-mounted dredge pump and 300 hp cutter drive assembly, and has a dredging depth capability of 56 feet. DSC supplied stainless steel hydraulic fittings and used anti-corrosion building practices, as the dredge will be working in a corrosive environment

Rugged Propulsion System Designed for the Swamps

A new all-terrain vessel propulsion system specially engineered and built for operation in extreme shallow water, riverine and mud flat environments will safely and reliably propel a vessel through dense vegetation, mud and debris-strewn waters.   The highly durable Swamp Shark Drive system has been introduced through a partnership between Louisiana-based boat builder Metal Shark has partnered with Angelle Development, LLC of Breaux Bridge, La.  

Metal Shark Wins $54 Mln US Navy Contract

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark said it has been awarded a contract worth up to $54 million from the U.S. Navy to build Near Coastal Patrol Vessels (NCPVs) for U.S. partner nations through the Department of Defense Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.   Metal Shark’s proposal was selected by Naval Sea Systems Command from a field of six competing shipyards.   Under the terms of the award, Metal Shark will build up to thirteen 85-foot Defiant-class welded aluminum

BMT Secures New Orleans Passenger Ferry Contract

BMT Group subsidiary BMT Nigel Gee has secured a new contract with sister company BMT Designers & Planners and Louisiana based shipyard Metal Shark for two 32m high speed/low wake wash, 149-passenger aluminum catamaran ferries for the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA).  BMT Nigel Gee will be responsible for concept through to production design with BMT Designer & Planners providing local U.S. presence and design engineering support.

Louisiana-based boat builder Metal Shark says it is ramping up production to build an inventory of stock vessels, with the goal of reducing lead times and enhancing its service to customers.   Metal Shark has traditionally custom-built each vessel to accommodate its customers’ unique mission requirements. Shark Fins Found Aboard Chinese Vessels

 Shark fins have been discovered on two Chinese fishing vessels during a joint surveillance conducted by Greenpeace and Guinean fishery authorities.    One of the vessels also had illegally altered fishing nets on board, while a third Chinese vessel was caught using illegal nets and fishing for species outside of its license. The two vessels with shark fins on board have been fined with Euro 250 000 each, while the third vessel has been fined with Euro 350 000

First Citywide Ferry Departs for New York

The first of 13 new passenger ferries being built by Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. for operator Citywide Ferry by Hornblower has departed the Alabama shipyard en route for its new home in New York.   The ferry H200 departed to the University of Alabama fight song trumpet fanfare from Horizon on Tuesday, March 21 and will travel approximately 1,700 nautical miles to New York City. The second ferry (H201) is scheduled to depart shortly.
