Matson Draws $70m from Credit Line

Matson Navigation Co. Inc. says it has drawn $70m under a $105m revolving credit facility in connection with its latest containership purchase. The 10-year senior secured reducing revolving credit facility is with DnB NOR Bank ASA, Norway's largest financial services group. "A portion of the funds borrowed under the facility was used in connection with Matson's purchase of a new containership, the MV Maunalei, which Matson took delivery of on July 12," Matson said Tuesday. "The balance of the funds borrowed under the facility was used for other general corporate purposes." The funds were drawn on July 12, the same day Matson, a subsidiary of Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc., took delivery of the Maunalei, the fourth new containership it bought since 2003 in a $500m modernization program.

The new containership, which was constructed at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. using Seaspan's fuel-efficient SAVER design, is Seaspan's second of five 10000 TEU SAVER design containerships scheduled for delivery in 2014. The Hanjin Namu will commence a ten-year, fixed-rate time charter with Hanjin Shipping Co. Ltd. ("Hanjin")

Seaspan Accepts Delivery of 14,000 TEU Box Ship

Seaspan Corporation has accepted delivery of a 14,000 TEU containership new build, the YM Warmth. The new containership, which was constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's sixth 14,000 TEU SAVER design containership and eighth delivery in 2015. The YM Warmth will commence a 10-year, fixed-rate time charter with Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. Yang Ming may extend the charter for up to an additional two years.

Enterprise Containership Detained; Repayment of $175 Million Bond Forced

Bondholders who financed the shipping company Enterprises Shipholding, said on Tuesday they had arrested one of the company's newest containerships, the Ocelotmax, to force repayment of a $175 million bond on which it defaulted in June. The Kyoto Express, Hapag-Lloyd’s latest mega containership, was named in Yokohama and consecrated with the traditional Shinto ceremony. The patron was the wife of NYK Chairman Minako Kusakari. The Kyoto Express is a giant containership measuring 1099 ft. (335 m) long, 141 ft. (43 m) wide; and over 197 ft. (60 m) from the keel to the superstructure. The newbuilding has a capacity of 104,000 t and can carry 8,750 standard containers (TEU)

Matson's New Ship Christened

The new Matson Navigation Co. containership MV Maunalei was christened at the Aker Philadelphia Shipyard. The christening, the traditional kind involving breaking a bottle of champagne, was undertaken by Millie Akaka, wife of Sen. Daniel Akaka. Also on hand were Hawaii Rep. Neil Abercrombie and Guam Rep. Madeleine Bordallo. The MV Maunalei is the fourth new containership built by the shipyard for Matson in the past four years

  Seaspan Corporation announced today that it accepted delivery of a 10000 TEU containership, the MOL Beacon. The new containership, which was constructed at Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's seventh 10000 TEU SAVER design containership and first delivery in 2015. Global Ship Lease New Time Charter with CMA CGM

 Global Ship Lease (GSL), a containership charter owner, announced that it has agreed to a new time charter with CMA CGM for an 8,063 TEU containership, the 2005-built OOCL Tianjin, which will be renamed GSL Tianjin.    The vessel will be chartered for a period of three to eight months (at the charterer's option) at a fixed rate of $13,000 per day, commencing immediately upon re-delivery from its current charter on or around October 25, 2017.

 Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)  announced that one of world's largest containerships, the MOL Truth, was delivered at the Saijo Shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (President: Yukito Higaki, Headquarters: Imabari-shi, Ehime Prefecture) on October 31.   The MOL Truth is the first containership with a capacity of over 20,000 TEU built in Japan, and the fifth in a series of six 20,000 TEU containerships that are operated by MOL. All nine of CMA CGM’s new gas-fueled Ultra Large Containerships will be built to Bureau Veritas (BV) class rules and under BV newbuilding supervision. The two China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) shipyards that will be building the nine 22,000 TEU containerships, Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Hudong Zhonghua) and Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co., Ltd (SWS), signed the classification contract with BV senior management at a ceremony during Marintec 2017

 MOL Triumph, the world's largest containership with a carrying capacity of 20,170 TEU, successfully arrived at Yangshan Port in Shanghai on April 10, 2017, said Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL)   MOL took delivery of MOL Triumph, the first of six 20,000 TEU-class containerships from Samsung Heavy Industries on March 27, 2017. At 400 meters in length and 58.8 meters in width, MOL Triumph is longer than the Oriental Pearl Radio and TV Tower of Shanghai is tall.  

Santos Express Delivered to Hapag-Lloyd

Hapag-Lloyd’s newest containership Santos Express was recently delivered from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) in South Korea.   The 10,500 TEU capacity, 333 meter long ship is the final of five vessels in the Valparaíso Express class.   The vessel fits through the new locks of the Panama Canal and will be deployed in liner service between North Europe and South America.   Following its recent merger with UASC

Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI), the wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Philly Shipyard ASA, and Matson, Inc., a U.S. carrier in the Pacific, today marked a milestone in the construction of the first of two new "Aloha Class" containerships to be delivered to Matson in the third quarter of 2018 and first quarter of 2019, respectively. Iceland’s Eimskip Ltd. and Greenland-based Royal Arctic Line A/S have ordered three new Arctic-capable 2,150 TEU containerships to be built at the Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China.    The new vessels, designed by Deltamarin to fit the two ship owners’ trading routes, will measure 180 meters in length and 31 meters breadth, larger than the current vessels in the trade.    The ice class ships will comply with the newly adopted IMO Polar Code

Yangzijiang Bags Newbuild Orders Worth $133 Mln

 China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has won six shipbuilding contracts worth a total of $133m during the second quarter of this year, Business Times reported.   Three of these orders for 1,800 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containerships were exercised from options tied to existing shipbuilding orders. Three others for 82,000-deadweight-tonne bulk carriers were new shipbuilding orders.   The new ships are scheduled to be delivered in phases between 2018 to 2020.

71% of New Box Ships Exceed IMO’s 2025 EEDI -Study
