MOL Conducts Gas Injection Demonstration

Tokyo  - Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) announced that it has been decided that Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (MES) and MOL will conduct a gas injection demonstration run utilizing a temporarily-modified electrically-controlled type slow speed diesel engine. The engine is designed, manufactured and delivered to a shipyard with oil injection specifications for one of the MOL newbuild vessels. However, during manufacturing, it will be temporarily modified to an electrically-controlled gas injection duel fuel slow speed diesel engine. The engine will be run with vaporized LNG at MES Tamano Works in the first half of 2013. LNG has recently been highlighted as one of the potential propulsion fuels for future ship design. MOL will start to investigate adoption of the demonstration-oriented gas injection technology to future vessels, along with its Sempaku ISHIN project, one of the environmental strategies in the midterm management plan “GEAR UP! MOL.” Gas burning technology has been developed and accumulated in MES through electric power generating operation of slow speed Gas Injection Diesel Engine (GIDE) at its Chiba Works. GIDE technology is combined with latest and proven electrically-controlled type slow speed diesel engine.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) signed an agreement to license its UE low-speed diesel engine technology to Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (VINASHIN). Under the agreement, MHI will provide VINASHIN with the licensing rights to manufacture its large-sized diesel engines. The contract applies specifically to the Mitsubishi UEC-LA, LA, LSII and LSE engines with cylinder bores ranging from 330 to 680 mm. Anglo Belgian Corporation, a manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines, announced the sale of two 16VDZD dual fuel engines that will power a new build vessel for the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME. RJE to Build GE Gas Turbine Modules for Australian Navy Frigates

New Zealand Navy Orders Polar-class Support Tanker

A new polar-class logistic support tanker for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) will be the first naval vessel to feature the Rolls-Royce Environship design with wave piercing bow.   The new vessel, which will replace the 30-year-old HMNZS Endeavor, will be significantly larger than its predecessor. The 23,000-metric-ton tanker will carry out operations in extreme Antarctic conditions and is strengthened and winterized to Polar code 6 requirements.

Rolls-Royce to Power New York's Newest Luxury Ferry

Rolls-Royce has won a contract to supply power and propulsion to New York’s newest and largest high-speed luxury ferry.   The catamaran, operated by New Jersey based Seastreak, will carry up to 600 passengers between Monmouth County, N.J. and Wall Street in less than 40 minutes at a top speed of 35 knots.   Power comes from four high-speed MTU diesel engines type 12V 4000 M64 from Rolls-Royce.
