KO-LINK Towing Ring Now Available from Lankhorst Ropes

The lightweight KO-LINK towing ring increases towing line service life

The KO-LINK towing ring, developed by international maritime service provider KOTUG International BV, is now available exclusively from maritime ropes supplier Lankhorst Ropes under a worldwide marketing agreement. The KO-LINK ring significantly increases synthetic towing line service life by preventing the HMPE pennant from cutting through the line. KO-LINK is a highly polished, lightweight, aluminum ring, which is inserted and attached to the splice eye of the towline. The ring connects the main towline and the pennant in such a way that a controlled weak link is created, preventing towing-line overload. Moreover, the KO-LINK replaces the commonly used cow-hitch knot, which if poorly made can cause unequal loading on the eyes resulting in premature line failure. As well as increasing towing line service life, the KO-LINK connection reduces the time required for rope operations, without compromising safety. In addition, the KO-LINK’s compact ring design allows it to be used without causing damage to the towing gear, tug’s winches and deck. The KO-LINK can be used with all types of synthetic rope, and is available for rope diameters from 54mm to 189mm, covering the whole range of synthetic towing ropes. “The KO-LINK is an important addition to the Lankhorst Ropes range and will allow operators to reduce the cost of towing operations

Four Rescued After Two Boats Crash on Manasquan Inlet Jetty

The Coast Guard and partner agencies monitor debris and pollution Monday after two boats grounded on the Manasquan Inlet jetty Sunday, stranding four people. The captain of the 32-foot boat, Slashbacks, contacted Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders at 11:30 p.m. Sunday via VHF-FM channel 16 radio reporting the Slashbacks lost power while towing a 31-foot boat, Lady Jane, through Manasquan Inlet. Alabama Shipyard Signs Another Tug/Barge Contract

Alabama Shipyard has signed a contract to build an articulated tug and barge (ATB) vessel for Allied Transportation Company of Norfolk, Va. Both vessels will be designed and built to ABS classification standards. "This is our third major contract award during the last four months of 2000," said Dick Wells, the yard's president. "The total value of these contracts is greater than $65 million. Our employment will grow to over 600 an increase of 300 new jobs from today."

Metalcraft Towboat for U.S. Navy with UltraJet Waterjets

MetalCraft Marine has delivered its first 26-ft US Navy Tow Boat to Cheatham Annex. Metalcraft Marine was recently awarded a contract by the United States Navy for the construction of eight of their 26-ft tow boats.  The tow boats will support the US Navy’s spill recovery, support and salvage operations worldwide. Ice Class Firefighter Tug Boat Given Ecospeed Protection

Last August, the 31-meter tug boat Ocean Raymond Lemay was coated with Ecospeed on the  Isle-aux-Coudres in Quebec, Canada. Update: Salvors to Board Grounded Transocean Winner

Final preparations are being made to put a small team of salvors on board the grounded semi-submersible oil rig Transocean Winner off the Isle of Lewis this afternoon. The rig broke free from a tow line in severe weather Monday and ran aground off the western isles of Scotland. Transocean Updates Rig Status

Transocean Inc. reported that damage assessments of the moored semisubmersible rigs Transocean Marianas and Deepwater Nautilus, which sustained damage during the recent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, are substantially complete and an estimate of repair time has been made for each unit. The company reported on September 27, 2005 that the Transocean Marianas was forced off its drilling location during Hurricane Rita, causing damage to the rig's mooring system

Coast Guard Investigating Collision

Crewmembers of Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Houston-Galveston are investigating the collision between the freight ship Napoleon and a tugboat with four barges in the Houston Ship Channel Monday night. A Coast Guard watchstander at Vessel Traffic Service Houston received the report of the collision via the pilot aboard the Napolean at approximately 10:40 p.m. According to the report the collision occurred while the Napolean attempted to over take the tug Jonathan Thomas

Update: Oil Rig Aground off Scotland

No further pollution has been detected in the area of the grounded oil rig Transocean Winner as the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) continues to monitor the scene.   The MCA counter pollution surveillance aircraft yesterday flew over the location and surrounding area to make careful observations for pollution around the rig and the nearby coast and sea and no sheen or sign of pollution has been found.  

Load Cells for Offshore Mooring Project

French maritime engineering specialist Iroise Mer used a 50 ton Straightpoint Radiolink plus (RLP) load cell during a refit of a tanker mooring system located 500m off the Corsica coast, recently. Tug Newbuild Alcor Delivered to Navibulgar

On June 2, 2017, MTG-Dolphin Shipyard delivered to Navigation Maritime Bulgare (Navibulgar) JSC the tug Alcor, the first of three vessels in series built to the RAmparts 2700 design by Robert Allan Ltd.   The tug adds to the fleet of four tugboats in the Navibulgar fleet and is the first tugboat built by the Bulgarian shipyard MTG Dolphin PLC-Varna for the Bulgarian ship owner, who owns more than 30 bulk carriers.

The Great Lakes Towing Company said it has repositioned its Tug Huron to Duluth, Minn. on Monday, January 2, 2017 to enhance capabilities for icebreaking, harbor assist and other services essential to commercial shipping in the Duluth-Superior region.   The Tug Huron’s first icebreaking operation of 2017 took place late Wednesday evening, January 4 when she assisted longstanding customer, Canada Steamship Lines M/V Thunder Bay in the Port of Duluth.

First US-built Rotortug Enters Service
