EU Funds Port Move
The Port of Cork has received almost EUR13 million in EU funds for the Euro100 million redevelopment of Ringaskiddy, as part of plans to modernize the port.
The funding comes under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and is primarily aimed at creating jobs and boosting growth.
Confirmation that the funding is forthcoming follows the decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission for a multi-million euro upgrade at Ringaskiddy.
The Port recently received planning permission to move its container facilities from Tivoli to Ringaskiddy — a decision which will allow it to expand its business over the coming years.
The Port of Cork’s Denis Healy, manager engineering services, said: “This funding will assist in ensuring the Port of Cork can meet future connectivity needs and will support the development of the wider regional and national economy which is of key importance to Cork.
“The funding will be invested in the first phase of the Ringaskiddy Port Redevelopment Project which was given the green light by An Bord Pleanála in May," Denis added.
The Port of Cork had unveiled plans for the project in April 2014. The matter went to an oral hearing last autumn before permission was granted to the Port of Cork on May 28th last.
Launched in September 2014, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) generated 700 applications totalling €36 billion of requested funding — three times more than the available envelope.
