Davie awarded vessel life extension (VLE) contract for Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker vessel

Canadian shipbuilder Davie informs it has been awarded a $16 million contract to refit and upgrade the CCGS Henry Larsen, a CCG T1200-Class Icebreaker based in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Medium icebreaker CCGS Henry Larsen is capable of sustained icebreaking and escort operations in the Arctic and Atlantic Region for the winter and summer seasons. The vessel joined the CCG fleet in 1988 and is named after the commander of the first vessel to cross the Northwest Passage in a single season.

The VLE and refit work, scheduled to begin at Davie in July 2015 and be completed by May 2016, involves various vessel modernizations and upgrades including an alarm and monitoring system, repair of the sea bay and renewal of the bubbler system, which aids vessel maneuverability during ice operations.

The project is partly funded under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS). The contract was awarded as part of a $360 million investment to extend the life of the Coast Guard fleet announced in February 2013, as well as part of the $183 million investment under the Federal Infrastructure Initiative for repair, life extension, and procurement of vessels and small craft announced in November 2014.

Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea said, “Since 2006, our Government has made historic investments to renew the Canadian Coast Guard fleet. In addition to ensuring maritime safety across Canada, these investments create quality jobs in the shipbuilding industry.”

Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, said, “This life extension contract for the CCGS Henry Larsen will enable the shipyard to support the creation of 100 jobs in the shipbuilding sector in our region and to ensure the Canadian Coast Guard has the equipment it needs to continue its important work.”

The CCGS Henry Larsen contract represents the fourth upgrade and refit contract awarded by the Canadian Coast Guard to Davie since the company came under new ownership in 2012, the most recent of which was a $13.6 million contract to extend the life of the CCGS Earl Grey in March 2015.
