Shaanxi province plans to build China's first hinterland international intermodal transit hub port to link the overland international freight route [see map] which they dub a new 'silk road', reports Xinhua.

The proposed Xian Hinterland International Transit Hub Port will focus on international logistics transit business and develop itself into a strategic pivot offering services between China's east coastal and western regions.

The hinterland hub facility will work closely with a number of eastern coastal ports and provide convenient sea-rail intermodal and seamless joint services for more hinterland enterprises by taking advantages of Xian International Port District's Xian Railway Container Central Station, Xian Comprehensive Free Trade Zone and Xian Road Port.

In addition, report Xinhua, the hub port is also intended to enhance the western region's ability to introduce and undertake high-level export processing and equipment manufacturing projects, balancing balance development of the eastern and western areas.
