Hempel launches new cargo hold coating offering best-in-class performance and value

Leading coatings manufacturer Hempel announced today the launch of Hempadur Impact 47800, a new dedicated coating for bulk carrier cargo holds. Hempadur Impact offers high-end abrasion, impact and corrosion resistance, and completes Hempel’s range of cargo hold coatings.

Hempadur Impact is a new dedicated cargo hold coating for shipowners who want a high-performance cargo hold coating with a very attractive price/performance ratio. The coating protects ship cargo holds from both mechanical damage and the severe abrasion caused when loading hard angular cargoes. With a 7½ year major repair interval, it enables shipowners to extend drydocking periods between major cargo hold coating repairs and so reduce maintenance costs.

Michael Aamodt, Group Marine Product Manager at Hempel, comments: “Hempadur Impact has been specifically developed for bulk carrier operators who want to extend cargo hold coating repair intervals, but don’t want to invest in the highest performing coatings. It offers high-end impact resistance to prevent ‘shooting’ damage from high-speed loading and a high glass transition temperature to ensure the coating remains hard when exposed to warm cargos. As a result, Hempadur Impact offers better protection than comparable cargo hold coatings on the market and a high return on investment.”

A low-VOC, pure epoxy coating, Hempadur Impact is available in grey, red and aluminium shades. It can be applied all year round to steel surfaces prepared to a minimum of Sa 2 .

“As well as offering a longer repair interval, Hempadur Impact cures quicker than comparable products,” says Michael. “As a result, shipowners can reduce the amount of time they spend in drydock, and their vessels can carry even the harshest cargoes after just three days curing time.”
