‘Maritime Spectrum’ of CMMI a Big Draw

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

January 27, 2015

For The Company of Master Mariners of India, the conference “Maritime Spectrum” that comes at the turn of each year has become a brand in itself, and each one witnessing a bigger gathering of mariners both on shore leave as well as others in land-based jobs. The organizers have been putting in a lot of effort to structure the programs so that participants benefit from them for furthering their career besides providing up-to-date information and details about the latest developments. This year too, the popular Panel Discussion at the Maritime Spectrum 2015 which focused on “Shore Based Careers Options for Seafarers” drew much attention.

Prominently, the list of speakers featured some leading personalities who have made it big after quitting the sea. The speakers offered very down-to-earth suggestions showing how mariners too could exploit their career at sea to their advantage and make life at on-shore into a gold mine.

Capt S.M. Halbe, Managing Director of Gulf Energy Maritime Services, as the moderator, very expertly steered the deliberations to ensure that the speakers yielded as much information and facts that helped them move up the path of ‘rag-to-riches’ glory. These panelists of speakers included Capt Vivek Bali, Managing Partner of Mubarak Marine Group of Dubai, Capt V.K. Gupta, Maritime Arbitrator & Maritime Lawyer, Capt Sansar Chaube, General Manager of the Port of Mundra and Capt C. S. Raj, Chairman of Sammar Maritime (Chartering /ICE, etc)

The revealing facts of the discussions were:-
•    There are several options and innumerable careers and jobs one could select from. The variety of fields available to make it big were unlimited;
•    Willingness to learn and believing in oneself while taking up challenges would bring success if one kept in mind that they have already made a success in their sea career and other careers are no different;
•    One should have staunch belief in humility to learn other skills from scratch because pride proves to be a stumbling block;
•    The climate ashore can open several opportunities and also live a better life;
•    All this is possible if one uses the sea career as a stepping stone to establish, grow and succeed in the shore-based career.
•    Even ladies mariners being considered as path-breakers in the seafaring profession also have equal opportunities’ if they wish to come ashore.

Besides the panel discussions, three presentations were made. Capt K. N. Deboo (Head, Anglo Eastern Maritime Training Center) in his talk described his recent sea adventure sailing through the Article Circle. He highlighted the hazards which one encounters navigating the icy blanket, the havoc that could prove to be fatal. He explained the hardship caused to passengers, crew and risk to the cargo during the Northern crossing and with the growing interest in exploiting the situation for commercial purposes he gave his views on how navigation through the Arctic is likely to evolve in time to come. He spoke at lengths about the Arctic Route and polar Code involving five countries and also he touched upon issues about the drifting ice, navigating aids and the treacherous night navigation is something to write home about.

Capt V.K. Gupta, Maritime Arbitrator & Maritime Lawyer, gave an introduction to the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Bill 2012. He touched upon cases of misappropriation of cargo, mis-declarations, piracy incidents and how all these they are treated by this law. He also touched upon ship cleared for demolition and highlighted the various rights for ship owners, such as if a ship were to be arrested there is a need to give 72 hours notice in advance. However, most countries have not ratified this convention.
Capt Vivek Bali also gave case studies of the task of salvaging handled by him and how he went about carrying out the various operations.
