L-3 MSI to Equip Third Quantum Class Ship

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide a range of navigation, lighting and communication systems for the third ship in Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum class. Built by Meyer Werft at its Papenburg shipyard in northern Germany, the 348-metre-long, 158,000-gross-ton ship is the sister vessel to Quantum of the Seassm, due to be delivered this year, and Anthem of the Seassm, to be launched in 2015, both of which have been similarly outfitted with L-3 equipment. “The three-ship project marks the next step in L-3’s growing support of the world’s premier cruise ship fleets with proven, cutting-edge shipboard system solutions,” said Ulrich Weinreuter, president of L-3 Marine Systems International.

L-3 SAM Electronics Equips Vidar Heavy-Lift Jack-Up

L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that it has completed the supply and installation of extensive drive equipment, as well as automation, navigation and positioning systems, on board the Heavy-Lift Jack-Up Vessel (HLJV) Vidar, which is operated by HOCHTIEF Infrastructure GmbH for construction and service support of offshore wind farms. The Vidar is the latest in a series of recently completed offshore turnkey projects undertaken by L-3 SAM Electronics on behalf of leading operators in the world’s offshore industry.

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today the promotion of Armin Groth and Maik Stoevhase to managing directors of its L-3 SAM Electronics business. As managing directors, Groth and Stoevhase report to Ulrich Weinreuter, president of L-3 MSI. Having worked in the maritime industry for more than 24 years, Groth joined L-3 SAM Electronics in 2006 as managing director of its STN Schiffselektrik subsidiary before he took over SAM’s Integrated Systems business in 2009.

L-3 MSI to Supply Electrical Packages to Biogas Ferry

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide advanced automation, navigation, communications and electrical propulsion facilities for Samsø Færgen, a new 100-meter, double-ended passenger/car ferry built by Remontowa Shipbuilding at its Gdansk shipyard on behalf of Danish proprietor, Samsø Municipality. Initially LNG-fuelled, Samsø Færgen is reportedly expected to become the world’s first ferry to operate on locally supplied biogas.

Green Shore Power Connection for 11 Hanjin Ships

L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that 11 Hanjin Shipping container vessels calling at the U.S. West Coast ports of Long Beach and Oakland, Calif., are to be fitted with its SAMCon high-voltage onshore power connection facilities. SANIL Electric Co., Ltd. is the prime contractor to L-3 SAM Electronics, and the end user is Hanjin Shipping. SAMCon will enable the vessels to meet California’s upcoming strict clean air regulations, when berthed at terminals, without generating harmful noise and air pollutants caused by active diesel engines.

L-3 SAM to Supply Electrical Package for DanTysk Wind Project

L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that together with its associated L-3 companies, it has been awarded a major contract for the supply and installation of the electrical system package on an accommodation platform being built in Kiel, Germany, by Nobiskrug of Rendsburg as part of the DanTysk offshore wind farm project jointly developed by Stadtwerke München (SWM) and Vattenfall. The accommodation platform for the new wind farm is designed to permanently support O&M personnel for DanTysk with fully equipped individual living quarters that will include general communal and leisure areas…

Dynamic Positioning Takes Control at Sea

Growing reliance on DP technology, a burgeoning global market and the focus on offshore safety means that DP capabilities are no longer optional. The requirement for Dynamic Positioning (DP) capabilities on offshore tonnage is growing in leaps and bounds; directly related to the offshore drilling boom in many parts of the globe. And, says Michael C. Ford, Vice President of Commercial Operations for L-3 Dynamic Positioning and control Systems, “The global market is larger than you would think. For every rig out there, 7 to 8 OSV’s and 2 construction vessels are needed to service that operation. In the next few years, it will involve at least $200 million USD in DP investment.” Ford goes on to say that offshore operations, as a minimum, now demand DP1 capabilities.

L-3 Westwood: $6.5m Order for DDG 114, DDG 116

L-3 Westwood received orders totaling over $6.5m from Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (GDBIW) to provide power distribution equipment  for the U.S. Navy’s DDG 114 and DDG 116 ships, respectively. DDG 114 and 116 are the 64th and 66th ships of the Arleigh Burke class being built for the U.S. Navy by the two companies. “L-3 Westwood is pleased to be working with great partners like Ingalls Shipbuilding and GDBIW,” said Clayton McClain, president of L-3 Westwood. “The DDG 114 order is noteworthy as it represents the 50th shipset of the DDG 51 power  distribution equipment that Westwood has received, and is the 23rd order from Ingalls.

L-3 MAPPS Awarded Contract for Degaussing Systems

L-3 MAPPS won a contract to supply degaussing systems for the Royal Canadian Navy’s 12 KINGSTON-Class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels. These degaussing systems will be delivered and supported locally in collaboration with SAM Electronics, an L-3 company, which produces one of the most effective means of ship protection against modern sea mines. The SAM Electronics solution reduces the magnetic signature of ships to safe levels mitigating the threat from sea mines and has been successfully delivered to 15 of the world’s leading navies. L-3 Maritime Systems Wins LCS Contract

L-3 Maritime Systems has been awarded a contract from General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems to supply its Seaframe Control System for the next Independence variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The contract is for the first ship and includes options for an additional 14 ships. Langeland New MD of L-3 Valmarine

L-3 Valmarine appointed Finn Inge Langeland as its managing director. He will report directly to Klaus Lorenz, vice president of European Operations for L-3 Marine & Power Systems. Mr. Langeland succeeds Ingvald Løvdal, who will manage the Marine Navigation division at L-3 Valmarine. Mr. Langeland has more than 15 years of operational management experience in the marine automation market. L-3 Contract to Manufacture Siemens Transformers

L-3 Power Paragon announced that its Power Magnetics division has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by Siemens Industry, Inc. The contract calls for L-3 to manufacture an undisclosed number of Siemens’ 17-megawatt Perfect Harmony Medium Voltage Converter Transformers, which Siemens will use for a large pipeline project in Asia. USCG Uses 3Com Technology To Launch Virtual Private Networks

The U.S. Coast Guard is deploying Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) based on 3Com's wide area network (WAN) systems). 3Com, which secures, high speed communications between shore facilities and vessels docked at port facilities around the world, uses VPN connections. These connections allow the agency to quickly transmit mission-critical and pertinent administrative information from its land-based location to ships at any port where Coast Guard vessel dock. USCG Launches $1.1 Million Virtual Private Networks

The USCG is deploying Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) based on 3Com's wide area network (WAN) systems. Using VPN connections, the agency will be able to quickly transmit mission-critical and administrative information from its land-based facilities to ships at any port where USCG vessels dock. Deployed in June on cutter Dependable, the 3Com VPN solutions will soon be extended to all of the USCG's 250+ ships. The $1.1 million investment in VPNs is based on 3Com's SuperStack II NetBuilder SI routers and follows the implementation of the Standard Workstation III Local Area Network (LAN) Cabling Project in 1998, when the agency rolled out 3Com Fast Ethernet networks to its entire fleet and many land-based facilities.

L-3 Norovirus Decontamination Backpack

L-3 Applied Technologies, a division of L-3 Communications, introduced a backpack concept of its SteraMist decontamination system on March 16 at the 2009 Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami Conference and Trade Show. SteraMist, originally designed for microbiological disinfection in hospitals, pharmaceutical, tissue bank and other health care facilities, is now available in a mobile unit suited to norovirus decontamination aboard cruise ships. The L-3 Applied Technologies business, based in San Diego, Calif., is focused on advanced technology sterilization, high energy and survivability solutions for both military and commercial applications.

Senior L-3 European Appointments

L-3 Marine & Power Systems Group, whose members include SAM Electronics, has appointed Klaus Lorenz as Vice-President of its European Operations. Reporting to Steve Kantor, President of the $1.3b Group, he will be responsible for all its activities throughout Europe, including business development as well as customer and inter-divisional relationships. Formerly President of SAM Electronics, which was acquired by L-3 in 2006, Mr Lorenz has been associated with the marine industry for over 35 years, having also held senior management posts with ABB.
