Accelleron Turbocharger Achieves High Efficiency on New Two-Stroke Engine

Source: Accelleron

Accelleron has been chosen to supply turbochargers for Japanese engine builder Makita’s first small-bore two-stroke marine engine featuring exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The step follows a successful matching test in which Accelleron’s A255-L turbocharger demonstrated high efficiency, supporting both low NOx emissions and overall fuel consumption on the Makita-built MAN B&W 6G45ME-C9.7-EGRBP engine. The Makita engine, 6G45ME-C9.7-EGRBP, will be the first of its type worldwide to feature EGR bypass…

ABB to Turbocharge First ME-GA Engines

(Photo: ABB)

ABB’s A200-L turbochargers will be used on MAN Energy Solutions’ 5G70ME-C10.5-GA engines destined for six 174,000m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers ordered by four shipowners – Korea Line Corp, PAN Ocean, Knutsen OAS and JP Morgan – under a long-term charter agreement with Shell. The ME-GA is MAN’s first low-pressure dual-fuel two-stroke engine. It sits alongside MAN’s well-established high-pressure ME-GI engines, offering LNG carriers and other vessels an alternative way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and minimize air pollution at lower capital cost.

ABB Debuts Air Outlet Silencer, Compact Turbocharger

ABB announced the launch of the large engine industry’s first commercial turbocharging air outlet silencer package at Marintec 2015 in Shanghai, China. Designed to contribute to reductions in engine room noise to meet the new International Maritime Organization SOLAS limits, the package is offered on A100-L and A200-L series turbochargers. Also at Marintec, ABB has launched its smallest turbocharger for two-stroke marine engines; the A160-L, with highest efficiencies and pressure ratios up to 5.0 enabling minimized fuel consumption for IMO Tier II and Tier III NOx compliance. The air outlet silencer is unique in being the first product available to the market to reduce noise emissions for turbochargers on low-speed marine engines.

ABB Turbocharging at Shangai CIMAC World Conference

ABB Turbocharging to attend upcoming 27th CIMAC World Congress on Combustion Engine Technology in Shangai, China. The World Congress, from 13-16, May 2013, is held once every three years and constitutes CIMAC’s major, most forward-looking, influential event. This year, the CIMAC World Congress is being hosted by CIMAC’s Chinese national member association, Chinese Society of Internal Combustion Engines (CSICE). China is the world’s fastest-growing producer of engines, and this year’s Congress is expected to shed new insights into Chinese engine development and its underlying drivers. This year, ABB Turbocharging will present its most cutting-edge…

ABB HPT Turbochargers Taken Up by MAN

ABB Turbocharging's high-pressure tuning (HPT) has been added to MAN Diesel & Turbo’s two-stroke marine diesel engine tuning options. HPT is a new engine tuning for part and low loads designed to fully leverage pressure ratio and turbocharger efficiency, two critical factors in a turbocharger that are often not used to their full potential. HPT forces more air into a two-stroke engine by increasing the pressure 0.5 bar above what would normally be expected from the turbocharger. Most turbocharging setups for part and low load require some extra hardware such as an exhaust gas bypass (EGB) or variable turbine geometry to reduce excess pressure from the cylinders.

ABB's New Turbocharger: 'A Quantum Technology Leap'

ABB Turbocharging unveil its new A200-L generation of single-stage turbochargers for low-speed two-stroke engines. The A200-L’s compressor stage has been optimized to enable significantly more additional volume flow. In comparison to previous models, the A200-L has up to 30% additional volume flow, which to date is fully the equivalent to one size smaller in a series of turbochargers. According to ABB this increase represents a quantum leap never before seen in the turbocharging industry. In effect, the power density of the turbocharger compared to other models is significantly higher. The turbocharger is often one of the heavier components to service on a ship, so the A200-L’s lighter design also makes it much easier to maintain.

New Marine Technology: The Hallmark of SMM 2000

The SMM exhibition in Hamburg has once again proven that it is the cradle of marine technology and the grand-daddy of all marine exhibitions. On display in 12 separate halls were more than 1,300 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, launching new products and discussing business with an estimated 37,000 visitors. More telling that sheer numbers, in this case, is the feeling of the exhibition and the ubiquitous marine technology theme. The quality of attendee and exhibitor is always high, but this edition of the bi-annual exhibition seemed especially charged due to the many positives currently running throughout the full spectrum of the maritime market.

Industry Pays Tribute to Innovation Awards Winners

Winners of the Lloyd’s List-SMM 2002 Awards for innovation in shipbuilding and marine technology were announced in the Hamburg Congress Centre last night (September 24) at a gala ceremony which brought day one of the world’s biggest maritime fair to a glittering conclusion. Several hundred leading industry figures gathered for the final stage of an initiative launched in March by Lloyd’s List and SMM organisers Hamburg Messe to recognise the technical advances which enable maritime commerce and defence. With 13 awards in three merchant and naval categories, the inaugural scheme attracted a massive wave of nominations for ships and support systems reflecting the cutting edge of ingenuity in improving performance, reducing costs and protecting the environment.
