Washington Navy Yard Remembers Shooting One Year Later
It was a day no one who worked on the Washington Navy Yard will ever forget. Shortly after 8 a.m., on Sept. 16, 2013, Navy contractor Aaron Alexis entered the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters building and killed 12 people while wounding four more - including two police officers. A year later, though much of the NAVSEA workforce is still displaced and many struggle to make sense of the tragic events, Washington Navy Yard employees met to remember the lives of coworkers, friends and loved ones during a short, 8 a.m. ceremony on the base.
US Navy Releases Report on Yard Shooting
U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus released, today, the Department of the Navy's investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic events of Sept. 16, 2013, at the Washington Navy Yard. The investigation team, led by Adm. John Richardson, focused on the prior military and employment history of the shooter, Aaron Alexis; the events of Sept. 16; and post-incident response. The team also assessed how well the Department of the Navy implemented programs and policies designed to safeguard people and protect mission capabilities. Specific details of the shooting and Alexis' possible motives are the subject of the ongoing criminal investigation and are not part of this investigation. Mabus acknowledged acceptance of the JAGMAN investigation.
Washington Navy Yard Perpetrator Killed in Shoot-out
A gunman who was shot dead after killing 12 people at the Navy Yard, and injuring 8 others now in hospital, has been identified as a former Navy serviceman, Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas, reports BBC News. In a press conference at MedStar Washington Hospital Center Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced he had conferred SECNAV Designee status on injured personnel. The Secretary of the Navy Designee Program provides special eligibility for medical and dental care from naval medical facilities for patients affected by the shooting.
