Wärtsilä to Power Mediterranean's First LNG Ferry

Wärtsilä said it has signed a contract with Construcciones Navales del Norte SL (LaNaval) shipyard in Sestao, Spain for the design and supply of the LNG power and propulsion installation for a new RoRo passenger ferry being built for Spanish owner Baleària, an operator serving the Balearic Islands. There is also an option for a second vessel. The contract, signed in August 2016, will also see Wärtsilä provide inclusive project support services to the yard, including integration engineering and on-site consulting, as well as commissioning of the combined systems.

Wartsila Wins Deal for Four LNG Tankers

Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract covering four newbuild tanker vessels. The ships are to be built at the Avic Dingheng shipyard in China, on behalf of three Swedish owners; Furetank (two vessels), Älvtank, and Thun Tankers, a fully owned subsidiary of Thunbolagen. The vessels will be commercially managed by Furetank Chartering in the Gothia Tanker Alliance. The contracts were signed in the second quarter of 2016. The ships will fulfil the IMO's Tier III requirements and will be fuelled primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The scope of Wärtsilä's supply to this project is extensive. Wärtsilä to Power Two Indian Dredgers

Wärtsilä has won an order for two new 8000m3 trailing suction hopper dredgers being built for the Adani group, India's largest private multi-port operator. The vessels are the first of a new IHC Beagle series designed by Royal IHC (IHC) of the Netherlands. IHC will also build the dredgers. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in February, 2016. The Wärtsilä scope of supply comprises two 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines for the first vessel, and two 7-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines for the second one, together with four Wärtsilä CPPs with shafts. In addition, Wärtsilä will supply a Super Trident sewage treatment plant with vacuum generation for both vessels. Delivery of this equipment will commence in September 2016.

Wärtsilä Welcomes Cadets of SUNY Maritime Training Ship

Wärtsilä welcomed cadets from the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College to its Trieste factory during the school's summer sea term Italian port stop in June. The students use the summer sea term to gain practical experience on board the SUNY Maritime training ship, the Empire State VI. Upon arrival in Trieste, the Wärtsilä Italy management team welcomed the group of close to 600, which in addition to the cadets, included the crew, faculty from SUNY Maritime College, as well as its president, Rear Adm. Michael Alfultis. This visit marked a return to Trieste for SUNY Maritime as the group was also hosted by Wärtsilä in 2013.

Wärtsilä Donates Engine to Texas A&M University

Wärtsilä has donated an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 engine and generating set, to the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The donation represents a continuation of Wärtsilä's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping future maritime sector leaders to acquire detailed understanding of marine technologies. The donation includes specialty tools and will provide students with valuable hands-on experience for expanding their knowledge of engine repairs, emissions and fuel economy. In addition to the equipment, Wärtsilä will also offer engine training to the Texas A&M Galveston engineering professors through the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Wärtsilä Joins LNG-powered Bulker Project

Wärtsilä is to team up with an international group of shipping industry companies and organisations in a project to develop a concept for equipping future dry bulk carrier vessels with LNG propulsion. Project Forward is led by Athens-based Arista Shipping. It began officially in May 2015 with the aim of developing a commercially feasible LNG powered dry bulk carrier design capable of complying with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index 2025 standards, as well as with all relevant emission reduction regulations. Wärtsilä Propulsion for First UK Dual-fuel Ships

he first ever UK domestic dual-fuelled new build vessels will feature fully integrated Wärtsilä propulsion machinery packages. Wärtsilä will also supply extended engineering and site support services. The two ships, both 102 metre long ro-ro passenger ferries, are being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) based in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The contracts with Wärtsilä were recorded in December 2015. Besides being the first dual-fuel vessels for CMAL, they are also the first ever dual-fuel ships to be built in the UK. These will be built by Ferguson Marine Engineering Ltd. The yard is located on the River Clyde in Glasgow. "This project highlights the fact that high-end, technologically advanced commercial shipbuilding is again present in Scotland.

Wärtsilä Design & Propulsion Machinery for Pelagic Trawler

A new pelagic fishing trawler ordered by Scottish owner Mewstead LLP will be built according to a Wärtsilä design and will feature a broad scope of Wärtsilä propulsion machinery. The ship is to be built at the Nauta Shipyard in Poland and when completed will be the largest and most efficient ship of its type in the world. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in November. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for mid-2017. The decision to choose the Wärtsilä ship design was based on the high level of efficiency derived from the optimised hull lines. This optimisation, together with Wärtsilä's highly efficient integrated engine and propulsion solution, results in far lower fuel consumption than would otherwise be possible.

Wärtsilä DF Engines for Shell's Bunker Vessel

A specialized LNG Bunker vessel to be built at the STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Company yard in South Korea on behalf of Shell will be powered by Wärtsilä DF dual-fuel engines. The ship will be used to deliver gas to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuelled vessels in Northwest Europe. The newbuild contract is in direct response to the increasing acceptance by the shipping industry of LNG as a marine fuel. The engine order was placed with Wärtsilä in December 2014. Wärtsilä has been at the forefront of the trend towards LNG fuelled shipping. Its industry leading dual-fuel engine technology and gas supply and control systems have been largely responsible for the viability of gas as a fuel for ships.

Wärtsilä Donates Ship Engine to S. Africa

An important initiative by Wärtsilä to support and stimulate the maritime economy in South Africa has come to fruition with the delivery of a state-of-the-art Wärtsilä 20 engine. The engine has been donated by Wärtsilä to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), and will be used to facilitate teaching within the University's School of Engineering. The donation is part of a long-term sponsoring partnership with NMMU and the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI). The official hand-over took place earlier in connection to the African Maritime Domain (AMD) Conference in Port Elizabeth in November but the actual delivery of the 11 ton engine has now been completed.

A new icebreaker being built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard for the Finnish Transport Agency will be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines capable of operating on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low sulphur diesel fuel. When launched in late 2015, it will be the first LNG-powered icebreaker in the world. Wärtsilä's track record in dual-fuel engine technology was a crucial factor in the award of the contract. By enabling LNG to be used as the engine fuel, both exhaust emissions and fuel costs are notably reduced.

New Eco-friendly Icebreaker to be Powered by Wärtsilä DF Engines

Wärtsilä says that a new icebreaker being built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard for the Finnish Transport Agency will be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines capable of operating on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low sulphur diesel fuel. When launched in late 2015, it will be the first LNG-powered icebreaker in the world. The full scope of supply calls for one 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20DF, two 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF, and two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF engines. The vessel will be able to move continuously through 1.6 meter thick ice, and be capable of breaking a 25 meter wide channel in 1.2 meter thick ice at a speed of 6 knots. It will also be able to reach an average assistance speed of 9 to 11 knots and in open water the service speed will be a minimum of 16 knots.

Wärtsilä Propulsion Packages for China's New Rescue Vessels

Wärtsilä has been contracted by the People’s Republic of China’s Communications Import & Export Corporation to supply the main propulsion system for four new ocean rescue vessels. The ships are being built at the CSSC Guangzhou Huang-Pu Shipbuilding Company Ltd shipyard in China, and are scheduled for delivery at the end of 2014. The order was signed in the second quarter of 2013 and is part of a series of contracts covering a total of 22 vessels. Wärtsilä to Supply Propulsion for Six Offshore Brazil PLVs

Wärtsilä received a significant order to supply the propulsion solutions for six new offshore pipe laying vessels being built by IHC Merwede. Three of the ships are to be built for Subsea 7, the seabed-to-surface engineering, construction, and services contractor to the offshore energy industry. The other three vessels have been ordered by Seabras Sapura, the Sapura Kencana and Seadrill partnership entity. All six vessels are scheduled to be delivered during the first half of 2015 and the second half of 2016.

Danish Ferry to Operate on LNG Fuel

Marine industry solutions and services provider Wärtsilä is to supply the main propulsion generating sets for a new, environmentally sound, double ended ferry. The ship, which is the first gas fuelled ferry for a domestic route in Denmark, will operate between Jutland and the island of Samsø and will carry passengers, cars and trucks. The vessel, designed by the Danish OSK-ShipTech A/S, will be built for the Danish municipality Samsø Kommune by Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdansk, Poland. Wärtsilä signed the contract in June.

This order is for the first Danish ferry to be operated on LNG fuel. The ferry project sets an environmental benchmark for inland ferries, and according to Wärtsilä is being closely followed by other municipalities and governmental bodies in Denmark and abroad. Wärtsilä is to supply the main propulsion generating sets for a new, environmentally sound, double ended ferry. German Ferry Switches to Dual-fuel Engines

Wärtsilä has been awarded an important retrofitting contract by the German shipyard, BVT - Brenn - und Verformungstechnik Bremen GmbH. The project entails converting the m/v Ostfriesland, a car and passenger ferry owned by Aktien-Gesellschaft "EMS", so that it can utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. The vessel sails between Emden and Borkum Island on the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park, an ecologically sensitive UNESCO World Heritage listed area in the southeastern part of the North Sea, and the retrofit will significantly reduce the ship's environmental impact.

Wärtsilä to supply cargo handling package, dual-fuel engines & propulsion for Denmark's Evergas to be built at Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China. In addition to LNG, the ships will be able to carry and reliquefy Ethane and LPGs with the cargo handling package supplied by Wärtsilä. The vessels will operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) using Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine technology. First North American Ferry gets Wärtsilä's LNG Solution

Wärtsilä gets propulsion order for the first LNG powered ferry in North America. Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions and services provider, has been awarded the contract to supply the gas powered propulsion machinery and corresponding gas storage and handling systems for a new passenger ferry. The vessel has been ordered by Canadian operator Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ), and will be the first North American ferry to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
