ABB Intends to Spin Off Its Turbocharging Business

ABB announced its intention to spin off Accelleron (formerly ABB Turbocharging) turbocharging division, by way of a dividend in kind of Accelleron Industries Ltd’s shares to ABB’s shareholders. Accelleron’s listing on SIX Swiss Exchange in Zurich is planned for October 3, 2022, and is subject to, among others, approval by ABB’s shareholders at an Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for September 7, 2022.“After careful consideration involving a dual-track process, we have concluded that spinning off Accelleron is the best way forward – for Accelleron itself and for ABB’s shareholders

ABB Turbocharging Launches Digital Tools to Save Fuel

ABB Turbocharging has launched a new digital solution designed to offer shipowners simplified management of propulsion efficiency and CO2 emissions monitoring and reporting, and potentially unlock up to 20% fuel savings.The new digital suite, called Tekomar XPERT marine, comprises three modules—engine, hull and propeller, and emissions—which, combined, provide actionable insights into ship performance to help shipping companies make better operating decisions and potentially reduce fuel usage. This, in turn, enables vessels to achieve improved carbon intensity index (CII) ratings.

ABB on Tuesday announced that its Turbocharging division (PA) will go under the new brand name Accelleron, a compound word of: Access – Accelerate – Excel – on and on.ABB said the new brand is part of its portfolio management strategy to operationally separate the Turbocharging division before a final decision is made between a sale or a spin-off of the business toward the end of the first quarter. Whichever path is chosen by ABB to separate the business, this process should be completed in the first half of 2022.“Unveiling the Accelleron brand is a seminal moment for our business.

Hyundai Global Service (HGS), the aftercare division of shipbuilder and engine maker Hyundai Heavy Industries, has teamed up with ABB Turbocharging to offer an engine part-load optimization (EPLO) service for shipowners seeking to cut emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) requirements.Ahead of the entry into force of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Index (CII) regulations in 2023, many vessel owners are looking to engine power limitation as a solution.

ABB to Turbocharge First ME-GA Engines

ABB’s A200-L turbochargers will be used on MAN Energy Solutions’ 5G70ME-C10.5-GA engines destined for six 174,000m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers ordered by four shipowners – Korea Line Corp, PAN Ocean, Knutsen OAS and JP Morgan – under a long-term charter agreement with Shell.The ME-GA is MAN’s first low-pressure dual-fuel two-stroke engine. It sits alongside MAN’s well-established high-pressure ME-GI engines, offering LNG carriers and other vessels an alternative way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and minimize air pollution at lower capital cost.

CIMAC World Congress: The Place Where the Large Engine Industry Meets

Every three years, the large engine industry meets for the CIMAC World Congress. Next year, after Helsinki in 2016 and Vancouver in 2019, Busan in South Korea will host the CIMAC Congress from June 13 -17, 2022. Shipbuilding is dominated by Asia with South Korea as key player for decades. So, there is good reason for the Congress to meet there.But, to first address the question that is currently being asked the most: Against the background of the pandemic, will the congress really take place? No one can know for sure, and there is certainly no guarantee.

Korean engine manufacturer HSD Engine is to offer ABB’s diagnostics and advisory software Tekomar XPERT to shipowners operating its two-stroke and four-stroke marine engines.Tekomar XPERT is a digital performance optimization platform applicable to any engine that is designed to help shipping companies achieve substantial fuel savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions. Under the agreement, HSD Engine will offer the software as an option to shipowners.“In response to market demand, HSD Engine reviewed various solutions for engine performance optimization and evaluation.

Shipping company Teekay is expanding its use of ABB Turbocharging’s engine diagnostics software to deliver deeper insights at fleet level.Teekay will roll out Tekomar XPERT for fleet, including the software’s new CO2 emissions indicator, across 54 Suezmax and Aframax tankers. The company, which has used Tekomar XPERT to monitor its vessels engines since 2015, will now be able to access deeper insights into fleetwide engine health and performance as well as at-a-glance CO2 emissions data.While Tekomar XPERT monitors the engines on an individual vessel to deliver diagnostics and advisory

Van Oord Inks Service Agreement with ABB Turbocharging

Dutch dredging company Van Oord signed a three-year agreement with ABB Turbocharging to provide fleetwide maintenance and optimization services. The agreement comes as two Van Oord vessels receive the first turbocharger upgrades of their kind in the dredger sector, an upgrade at saving fuel and carbon emissions over the next decade.The service agreement, which marks more than 30 years of cooperation between Van Oord and ABB Turbocharging, is designed to help the owner minimize lifecycle costs and improve emissions across its fleet.

ABB Opens Two-stage Turbocharging to a Wider Market

ABB Turbocharging will launch in mid-2017 a new frame size for its two-stage turbocharging solution, Power2 800-M, extending the benefits of high pressure ratios, increased turbocharging efficiency and fuel savings to a wider scope of medium-speed engine configurations, the manufacturer said. The new frame size, Power2 845-M, applicable to an increased range of ship propulsion solutions, will open up the efficiency and operational benefits to a greater spectrum of vessel types, said ABB Turbocharging.

Wärtsilä, ABB Expand Engine Performance Partnership

Having signed an agreement to expand their cooperation in lifecycle service offerings, ABB has granted Wärtsilä the Authorized Service Provider status for standard maintenance of ABB turbochargers installed with Wärtsilä four-stroke engines. The companies say customers will benefit from enhanced engine performance optimization over the lifecycle as a result. Furthermore, continuous development of turbocharger upgrade packages and future digital offerings will lead to improvements in fuel efficiency

ABB Acquires Tekomar

With its most recent acquisition, ABB has further expanded its ABB Ability portfolio of digital products and services with the addition of a new propulsion performance monitoring solution. ABB Turbo Systems Ltd. has signed an agreement to acquire Swiss headquartered Tekomar Group Ltd. ABB said it will further develop Tekomar’s digital solution for engine analytics and advisory systems enabling better performance for marine customers. The transaction is expected to be closed during Q4 2017.

ABB Turbocharging has raised the industry benchmark for low-speed turbocharging efficiency to achieve an additional turbocharger efficiency increase of 2 percent by performing the measurement on an actual engine on an engine testbed. As a performance yardstick for low-speed turbochargers, the industry applies the turbocharger effi-ciency benchmark given by MAN Diesel & Turbo, a leading global low-speed engine designer. Durability field-test results of ABB’s variable valve train system, Valve Control Management (VCM), have shown unprecedented success of the technology on an MTU high speed gas engine. The successful running of each VCM actuator for 7,000 hours on an engine is an important milestone for the forthcoming serialization of this technology.
