Anschütz is delivering advanced, customized integrated bridge systems (IBS) to three multi-purpose vessels for the German Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) built by Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R).The vessels will run exclusively on LNG, with sophisticated systems supporting a wide-ranging mission profile.The IBS consists of six Synapsis NX workstations with chart radar, ECDIS and conning, providing advanced features for precise and safe navigation, while using another ECDIS as a planning station.

ABB has won a contract to deliver power and propulsion systems for the superyacht to be constructed by the German yacht builder Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard (A&R). Scheduled for delivery in 2025, the 100-meter-plus vessel will be one of the largest ever constructed at A&R’s yard in Lemwerder, Northern Germany. The extensive scope of ABB systems onboard will include Azipod propulsion, Onboard DC Grid, a 500kWh Energy Storage System (ESS) and Power and Energy Management System (PEMS), whose combined and fully integrated capabilities will reduce emissions, noise, and vibration.

Three new multipurpose vessels ordered from the Abeking & Rasmussen ship and yacht shipyard (A&R) in Lemwerder by the German government for the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) will be equipped with SCHOTTEL propulsion systems. Planning and design as well as tendering and continuous construction supervision are carried out by the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW), Ship Technology division.Maneuverability, high bollard pull, increased availability combined with maximum propulsion efficiency are important for these vessels.

111 years of success by designWhen Georg Abeking and Henry Rasmussen from Denmark established their boat and yacht yard 111 years ago, it is likely that neither of them suspected at that time that their small shipyard, headquartered in Lemwerder next to Bremen, would one day evolve into a world-renowned company known for building first class vessels.Today the company, which has been transferred into a European Company (Societas Europaea, SE), is a company that designs and manufactures, among other things. Included in this mix are some of the world’s most luxurious yachts.

Offshore wind farm development has been led globally by the UK, followed by Germany. Both countries have governments with long term commitments to renewable energy. Denmark, Belgium and The Netherlands are building wind farms, but they are a long way behind the leaders in offshore wind. In 2014 the UK accounted for over 50% of all the offshore wind energy generated globally. All of these countries border the North Sea, a notoriously stormy sea area, which has a high frequency of wind to drive the turbines. Traditional survey vessels are first to arrive in a potential wind farm area.

German shipbuilding has made a significant turnaround. The country’s shipbuilding industry has seen increases in the number of employees, orders and deliveries compared to 2013, according to the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM). The special shipbuilding sector drove this growth, as 20 of the 34 delivered new builds could be classified as high-quality special vessels or naval units. Although VSM announces its annual balance officially in May of each year, MR was able to obtain some early insights into the results.

While economies across Europe have essentially bumbled, stumbled and fumbled in the wake of the global economic meltdown, Germany has remained comparitively strong. Despite the general migration of shipbuilding to the Far East, we decided to check in on the current status of this proud nation with a strong maritime heritage. German shipbuilders concentrated in 2012 on building cruise ships, megayachts, freight ferries and additional high-value, specialty ships. In total, nine German shipyards across 12 shipbuilding sites supplied 21 sea going ships with a total tonnage of 473,700.

Seawork, the commercial marine industry exhibition and conference (ABP Port of Southampton UK, 25-27 June 2013; www.seawork.com), has expanded into a third hall, due to increased demand for stands from exhibitors. At the close of 2012, Hall A was completely sold out, with Hall B set to follow close on its heels. The unique combination of exhibition stands, quayside and pontoons for vessels consistently attracts over 6,500 thousand marine professionals from around the world and is set to achieve further growth in its 16th year. SpecTec has been contracted for the delivery of a comprehensive IDEA management software system to M/Y Slipstream and sister vessel M/Y Cloud Nine. Both vessels are currently under construction at CMN shipyard in Cherbourg, France and are due for delivery in February and June 2009 respectively. SpecTec has been contracted for the delivery of a comprehensive IDEA management and documentation system to the next two vessels of AMELS’ 171 semi-custom mega yacht series. Both vessels are currently under construction at the yard’s Vlissingen facility and will be delivered mid 2009.

Abeking & Rasmussen has secured an order for five 25m SWATH@A&R Patrol Boats. The vessels for the Latvian Navy will be designed by A&R and constructed and delivered in co-operation with Riga Shipyard. The new vessels will derive from the well proven SWATH pilot boats, which are in operation since 1999 in the German Bight and recently in the Dutch Waters. They will have the same main dimensions and underwater ship with a complete new propulsion and accommodation concept. The new vessels will feature a modular mission bay at the fore ship.

A number of the leading superyacht builders will be present at the SMM 2008. Lürssen is rated by the British trade magazine “The Yacht Report” as the world’s number one yacht builder, with a total of some 57,000 gross tons (GT) in the superyacht sector, followed by Blohm + Voss, a shipyard belonging to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), with some 50,000 GT at its two locations in Hamburg and Kiel. The Top Ten in this field include SMM exhibitor Amels, which belongs to the Dutch shipyard group Damen, and also Abeking & Rasmussen. On January 31, 2004 at Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lemwerder/Germany a 25m SWATH@A&R vessel was launched. The Explorer will be used as a “Demonstrator” vessel for the further development of the “Minehunting 2000” remote controlled minehunting system. The contract for developing this system was awarded in 2002 to a consortium consisting of Abeking & Rasmussen, Atlas Elektronik, EADS and Lürssen. The newbuilt SWATH vessel is based very closely on the proven 25m SWATH@A&R® Pilot Vessels, which are in operation in the North Sea since 1999. Keel laying was done on March 21st last year.

Thoma-Sea Boatbuilders Inc., Houma, La., launched the first of two new 150-ft. offshore supply vessels (OSVs) it is building for Massie Towing of Houma. The vessels were designed by Frank Basil of Intech & Associates, also of Houma. The first vessel, M1, entered service in mid-June, and the second vessel is scheduled to launch in December 2000. Massie will operate both vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. Propulsion power for the two new OSVs comes from twin Cat 3508EUI marine engines, each rated 905 bhp (675 bkW) at 1,600 rpm. The electronic unit injected 3508s drive Bird Johnson 72 x 59 in. propellers through Twin Disc 5:1 gears, providing a service speed of 14 knots.

SMM is increasingly becoming a platform for the upmarket segment of super yachts. This area is presented at the SMM at Hamburg Trade Fair by shipyards, and all relevant equipment suppliers exhibit at the leading shipbuilding fair. For the first time this year there will be a special exhibition focus on super yachts in Hall 8. Over 1,600 companies from 50 countries will present the latest developments in all areas of the maritime sector at 22nd Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology, International Trade Fair Hamburg from September 26th-29th. Super yachts are generally not included in the tonnage statistics on ship deliveries or newbuilding orders, despite the fact that this segment has become increasingly significant year by year.

The christening ceremony and the commissioning of the second pilot tender Perseus for the Netherlands Loodwezen B.V. will take place on the January 20 in Rotterdam. The christening ceremony will be performed by Princess Margriet von Oranien-Nassau, the sister of the Netherland’s Queen Beatrix. Other policy, economy and industry representatives from the Netherland’s, Belgium and Germany will be attending. The contract for two SWATH@A&R pilot tenders and an option for four additional vessels was signed on May 2004. The vessel was built in 16 months. It is the seventh SWATH@A&R vessel delivered by Abeking & Rasmussen.

Just two weeks after christening the first of three 216 ft. (66 m) Offshore Patrol Vessels, the German Coast Guard (Bundesgrenzschutz) ordered an extensive software and data package for Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) of the new " Bad Bramstedt"-class from Abeking & Rasmussen, designers and builders of the new vessels. The order consitsts of three on-board versions and one shore version of the new developed Virtual Ship Explorer (VSE). The logistic company Ocean Logistics GmbH, a subsidiary of Abeking & Rasmussen is responsible for the total system. With the on-board version the crew will be able to manage all documentation for on-board systems, including full spare parts logistic, i.e.

The Federal Ministry of Transport has decided to order a fourth SWATH Pilot Vessel from Abeking & Rasmussen following successful operation of the first three SWATH@A&R vessels for pilot service in the German Bight and the Elbe Approach. Since commissioning of the Elbe Range Pilot System in 1999/2000, shipborne pilot transfer increased significantly. The efficiency of the "Elbe Range" system resulted in cost savings of several million dollars each year, making the decision much easier for the new 82-ft. (25-m) SWATH@A&R Pilot Tender which will be delivered in Autumn 2004 and will extend the Elbe Range System up to the outer Weser Approach.
