Japan’s defense minister criticized China on Monday for sailing an advanced stealthy nuclear submarine close to disputed islands claimed by Japan and China, saying the action had stoked tension. One Person Missing After Boat Capsized
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person who ended up in the Pungo River near Hobucken, N.C. after a boat capsized. The 21-foot TowBoatUS vessel was towing a 47-foot recreational boat when the lead vessel capsized near the river entrance Thursday morning. Officials say and they are now searching the water for a 45-year-old TowBoatUS captain reported to be wearing coveralls, rubber boots and a lifejacket. Casino Boat Catches Fire off Florida Coast, 15 Injured
At least 15 people were injured when a fire engulfed a boat off the coast of Florida on Sunday, causing the 50 people aboard to jump into the Gulf of Mexico and swim to shore, local officials said. A preliminary investigation showed the fire broke out at about 4:17 p.m. EST from an apparent engine issue, said Shawn Whited, division chief with Pasco Fire Rescue. “The captain of the boat said there was an issue with the engine. He said he noticed smoke coming form the engine room and turned the boat around,” Whited said.
New Patrol Boat Delivered to Puerto Rico PD
The Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) has taken delivery of a new patrol boat from Louisiana-based boatbuilder Metal Shark. The new 35-foot Defiant welded aluminum pilothouse patrol vessel, built at Metal Shark’s Jeanerette, La. production facility, joins the fleet of 36-foot Metal Shark Fearless-class high performance center console patrol boats delivered to the PRPD a year ago. The PRPD’s new patrol boat features a fully-enclosed, climate-controlled pilothouse for all weather operation, outfitted with Shockwave shock-mitigating seating for a crew of four, the builder said.
New Lake Erie Coast Guard Boat on Show
The crew of Coast Guard Station Lorain show their new Response Boat-Medium to press and public at their Lake Erie station. Crew members say they have have been running tests on Lake Erie and have found that the RB-M responds faster than previous boats of similar size, with a top speed in excess of 40 knots. It also is equipped with advanced search capability, including forward-looking infrared search technology. It can handle waves up to 12 feet and can carry as many as 25 people.
Remote Control Boat Assists Flood Repair
A remote control boat equipped with a SonTek M9 Acoustic Doppler Profiler (ADP) has been employed with HydroSurveyor software to create a three-dimensional map of a damaged (and still submerged) flood barrier, following serious damage that took place during last December’s storms. Data from the survey enabled the Environment Agency to act swiftly and effectively to repair the damage and thereby protect local industry and residents. Extreme weather conditions and the highest tide for 150 years resulted in serious damage to a flood bank at Seal Sands near Billingham in the North East of England.
HMAS Glenelg Saves Sea Turtles
A quiet watch was the expectation for Leading Seaman Boatswains Mate James Cole in patrol boat HMAS Glenelg, but what he got was a lesson in ocean rescue for some entangled wildlife. “I stepped on to the bridge wing to get some fresh air and as I did, I noticed a net floating past,” he said. “As I looked closer, I saw that it was moving – there were three large sea turtles caught in the net,” Leading Seaman Cole said. A call was quickly made to Commanding Officer Lieutenant Commander Gary List, who decided to stop the boat and attempt to rescue the turtles.

New Equipment at Blount Boats
Blount Boats has made significant upgrades to its physical plant thanks mostly to a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation¹s Maritime Administration. NVision, Inc., a company in 3D laser scanning and reverse engineering for over 24 years, said it was able to help a motorsports boat designer optimize the design of the custom-built propellers created for its Top Fuel Hydro drag boat. PMI to Train Alaska Marine Highway System Personnel
Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI), the West Coast affiliate of the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) will be providing Fast Rescue Boat training for marine personnel of the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS). The Fast Rescue Boat training will take place on the M/V Columbia on September 22-26 and September 29-October 3, 2003. The Alaska Marine Highway System requires that Chief Mates, Boatswains, Able-Bodied Seamen, and First and Junior Engineers must obtain Fast Rescue Boat certification on their STCW-95 certificates.

Coast Guard Receives New Response Boat
The crew of U.S. Coast Guard Station Milford Haven accepted delivery of the station's newest asset, a 45-foot Response Boat - Medium, Thursday, which represents the 146th boat in a fleet of 170 being delivered to the service. "It's exciting for the crew and myself to be in the position to take over the platform, train on the platform and ultimately to be able to serve the boating public of the Chesapeake Bay with a faster and better response platform that what we currently have," said Chief Petty Officer David Dickinson, the officer-in-charge of Station Milford Haven.
New USCG Response Boat Delivered in Ohio
The crew of U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Station Marblehead, Ohio, officially accepted delivery Thursday of the station’s second 45-foot response boat, doubling the rescue capability of Ohio-based Coast Guard station, the USCG said. The response boat, uilt by Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wis., will increase the ability of Station Marblehead’s crew to respond to search-and-rescue cases by augmenting its current complement of one 45-foot response boat, two 25-foot response boats, one 20-foot airboat and one inflatable rescue craft.
Long Island Coast Guard Receive New Boat
Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck, N.Y., receive a new 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RB-M) rescue boat. The new boat, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RB-M), was issued to replace one of two aging 41-foot utility boats at the station. The RB-M is an aluminum, self-righting, high-speed, multi-mission capable boat, able to respond rapidly to Coast Guard missions, or conduct planned patrols and training. The primary roles of the RB-M are search and rescue and maritime law enforcement. Plans for a second RB-M to replace the remaining utility boat are in the near future.

Coast Guard Responds to Vessel Taking on Water
The Coast Guard came to the rescue of a vessel taking on water 1 mile off the coast of New Jersey this afternoon. The vessel Speculation, a 42-foot wooden hull recreational boat homeported in Freeport, NY, radioed the Coast Guard and reported that they were taking on water. The Coast Guard deployed a 47-ft. boat from Station Manasquan to the scene. The crew of the 47-ft. boat provided extra dewatering pumps to the five people on board the Speculation. The pumps were able to keep up with the amount of flooding which stood at 2-ft. of water in the ships bilge. The Coast Guard Cutter Seahorse, an 87-ft. patrol boat homeported in Portsmouth, Va., was also directed to the scene to provide additional pumps if needed. A boat from Tow Boat U.S. towed the vessel back to Manasquan Inlet.
Sight-Seeing Boat Capsizes While Helping Others
A watchstander at Coast Guard Station Port Aransas received a call at approximately 11:10 a.m. from a Good Samaritan reporting a capsized boat with three people in the water. The same Good Samaritan was able to pick up and bring all three people in his boat. In the process, a dolphin sight-seeing boat trying to assist, motor vessel Flipper, capsized and put all 18 people onboard in the water. The Coast Guard launched a rescue boat crew from Station Port Aransas. The Coast Guard boat located the overturned vessel. Aransas' boat crew arrived and rescued all 18 people with the assistance of a Good Samaritan that was in the area. All survivors were wearing life jackets and no injuries were reported.
