ABS Approval Advances Tension Leg Platform Concept
ABS granted approval in principle (AIP) for a Tension Leg Platform (DSTLP500) design developed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC). “ABS and DSIC have a long relationship and have worked closely on a broad range of offshore projects, semi-submersible units, jackups and drill ships,” said ABS Executive Vice President for Global Offshore Kenneth Richardson. “Gaining ABS approval is an important step in helping bring this project closer to realization,” said Wenmin Liu, China Ship Design Master and Senior Offshore Technical Expert DSIC.
Jastram Cylinders Receive ABS Type Approval
Jastram Engineering has been granted ABS Type Approval status for its Model S hydraulic steering cylinders. Installed mainly on workboats, supply vessels and tankers - to name a few, the cylinders are designed with the commercial marine hydraulic steering service in mind under the ABS Approval. ABS Type Approved Pressure Transmitters / Transducers
American Sensor Technologies, Inc. (AST) has received ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) Type Approval for its pressure instrumentation. Through a factory audit of its New Jersey manufacturing facility, ABS confirmed AST’s manufacturing site, quality management system and conformance to ABS standards. By receiving the approval, AST has broadened its portfolio for the marine and offshore instrumentation industry. AST's pressure transmitters are known as a cost effective, yet extremely reliable alternative to other transmitters available on the marketplace, the manufacturer said.

Wesmar Wins ABS DP1 Approval
Wesmar announced that their Model V2-20NS Vortex dual prop all stainless steel bow thruster has been given ABS approval for dynamic positioning applications (DP1). The horsepower rating for the V2-20NS is 75 to 150, and the company anticipates similar approval soon for their V2-26 and V2-36 systems, which operate on vessels up to 350 HP. Wesmar’s polished stainless steel props are standard, and stainless steel seal with bearing carriers sync with the stainless steel casting. ABS Awards AIP for Innovative LNG Carrier Design
GE’s Marine Solutions and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. (HZ) have received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the America Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a jointly developed liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier design to be powered by GE’s Combined Gas Turbine Electric and Steam (COGES) system. “We are delighted to work with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding on this 178,000 cubic-meter LNG carrier design that will use our efficient, reliable and dual-fuel marine gas turbine,” said GE’s Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations.
Mech-Tool Delivers Fire System to DSIC Offshore
Darlington based product manufacturer and global supplier of fire, blast and heat protection systems Mech-Tool Engineering Ltd (MTE) said it has delivered a fully certified ABS fire rated wall system for a Chinese turnkey EPC contractor in offshore construction. The company’s stainless steel A60 fire rated wall system will offer the ultimate protection to personnel on the deep-water semi-submersible rig, BT4000, should they need to use the evacuation lifeboats during an emergency.

NSF Expands Independent Lab for USCG
The NSF International Independent Laboratory (IL), the first designated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to test ballast water management systems (BWMS) for U.S. type approval, will now include the American Bureau of Shipping’s (ABS) expertise. ABS will complete design/construction and documentation reviews as part of the type approval, and will work with three other IL partners to maximize the value of USCG type approval testing for BWMS manufacturers. ABS will also evaluate the appropriateness of the systems for installation and operation onboard vessels. NSF’s IL partnership, formed in 2012, includes Retlif Testing Laboratories, the Great Ships Initiative, the Maritime Environmental Resource Center and now ABS.
The Versatile ATB Enters the LNG Game
EBDG’s LNG bunkering barge design receives ABS approvals as the maritime industry increasingly looks to LNG as a fuel of the future. In early June, Federal Maritime Commissioner William P. Doyle told listeners at an LNG Bunkering conference in Vancouver, Canada that “Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering in North America is moving forward … There is an abundant supply of natural gas in North America. Utilizing natural gas as a marine fuel would help ship owners and operators comply with the MARPOL Annex VI requirements to reduce air pollution from ocean going vessels.” That much is true.
