Port Security: Autonomous ANTX

Geophysical seismic surveys and port security may appear to have little in-common. However, it turns out that managing complex marine seismic operations, where 10km-long seismic streamers have to be deployed harmoniously alongside other offshore marine assets, isn’t that dissimilar to managing – and protecting – port facilities.It's an area that ION Geophysical, more known for seismic data acquisition technology, has recently been proving its expertise in, using its Marlin system for marine operations management.

TGS Makes Surprise $600 Mln Offer for Part of Rival PGS

Seismic surveyor TGS, a supplier of geological data to the global oil industry, on Thursday said it had made an unsolicited cash offer of $600 million for a key part of rival PGS.If successful, the offer to buy PGS's so-called multi-client library would significantly broaden TGS's worldwide geophysical data offering, the company said.PGS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.In addition to spending cash from its current holding, TGS said it will borrow $200 million and also conduct an equity issue to pay for the transaction.While TGS' strategy has been one of rentin

Shearwater Bags 4D Seismic Gig in APac

Shearwater GeoServices, a marine geophysical services company, has been awarded the largest-ever 4D seismic campaign in the Asia/Pacific region covering up to six fields operated by Woodside offshore Australia.According to the 50/50 joint venture between GC Rieber Shipping and Rasmussengruppen  AS, the campaign, planned to commence in Q4 2019, covers new 4D acquisition over the Pluto, Brunello, Laverda, Cimatti and Vincent fields with an option for one additional field.The 4D seismic campaign will improve Woodside’s understanding of the fields’ production performance over time and provide data to guide future field developments. USCG Awards Polar Icebreaker Contracts

The U.S. Coast Guard awarded five firm fixed-price contracts for heavy polar icebreaker design studies and analysis Wednesday. The contracts were awarded to the following recipients: Bollinger Shipyards, LLC, Lockport, Louisiana; Fincantieri Marine Group, LLC, Washington, District of Columbia; General Dynamics/National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, San Diego, California; Huntington Ingalls, Inc., Pascagoula, Mississippi; and VT Halter Marine, Inc., Pascagoula, Mississippi. The combined total value of the awards is approximately $20 million.

MHI Delivers "Jinryu" Japan's 7th Soryu-Class Submarine

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) delivered the "Jinryu" submarine to the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MOD) today in a ceremony held at the MHI Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works' No.3 pier in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The Jinryu is the seventh Soryu-class submarine supplied to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), and the fourth built by MHI. MHI also built the first Soryu-class submarine, and has produced a total of 26 submarines at the MHI Kobe Shipyard over the last 70 years. The delivery ceremony was attended by a number of MOD officials including State Minister of Defense Kenji Wakamiya, JMSDF Chief of Staff Tomohisa Takei, and Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency Commissioner Hideaki Watanabe.

Australia, Japan Partner for Hydrodynamics Research

Australia and Japan have signed a cooperative research arrangement on marine hydrodynamics, the Chief Defence Scientist, Dr Alex Zelinsky, announced today. “This is the first joint defence research project to be conducted by our two countries,” Dr Zelinsky said. The collaborative research program will be undertaken by Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group and Japan’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency. “This is an excellent start to our new relationship in defence science and technology cooperation,” Dr Zelinsky said. “Understanding hydrodynamics is vital for the future of Australia’s maritime defence and this collaboration will greatly benefit our technology development in this area.

Multiclient Seismic Data Offshore Mozambique Available from Schlumberger

Schlumberger announced today the availability of its multiclient seismic survey offshore Mozambique. The Schlumberger multiclient seismic data offered in collaboration with the National Petroleum Institute of Mozambique (INP) includes reprocessed 2D lines and newly acquired seismic data, and provides detailed imaging of the subsurface. “The recent discoveries and regional appraisals in the area indicate significant frontier exploration potential,” said Maurice Nessim, president, PetroTechnical Services, Schlumberger. ONR to Develop App for Pirate Problems Etc.

The International Collaborative Development for Enhanced Maritime Domain Awareness (ICODE MDA) was one of 14 projects selected by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics to receive $1 million awards beginning this fall through the Coalition Warfare Program, which funds international collaborative research efforts. The ICODE MDA project is a research alliance between ONR and Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific).

Emsys Selected for 3 Rig Contract

W R Systems, Ltd (WRSystems) have been awarded a contract to supply its  laser-based Emsys Emissions Monitoring System (EMS) to a major offshore drilling contractor for three drilling ships/rigs located in the Gulf of Mexico. The EMS will be incorporated into the vessel’s proprietary data management technology, to provide compliance with each vessel’s EPA Air Permit requirements. WRSystems has been working with the drilling contractor for over a year in preparation for these projects.

The Fleet Maintenance & Modernization Symposium 2011, "Current & Future Maintenance Strategies," will occur August 30-31, 2011 at the Town and Country Resort & Conference Center in San Diego, Calif. FMMS 2011 will include guest speakers, panelists and paper presentations from the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, industry and academia. ASNE is calling for papers for this symposium. Web-based Procurement Management Systems Standardize Purchasing Procedures, Increase Transaction Oversight and Streamline Accounting Processes for the U.S. The Defense Energy Support Center (DESC), a field activity of the Defense Logistics Agency and an agency within the U.S. Government Department of Defense, is responsible for the procurement of all energy-related resources in support of the warfighters of the U.S. DESC program management began implementing card programs for the purchase of ground and aviation fuel in the mid-1990s. The success of these programs led to the formal creation of the Government Fuel Card Program Office in 2006. The department’s focus was to implement, manage, and improve fuel procurement services offered by the DESC.

Navy Announces DD(X) Program

The Navy announced today that it will issue a revised Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Future Surface Combatant Program. Formerly known as DD 21, the program will now be called DD(X) to more accurately reflect the program purpose, which is to produce a family of advanced technology surface combatants, not a single ship class. DoD Certifies LPD-17 Program

The LPD-17 Amphibious Transport Dock Ship program is one of six acquisition projects the Defense Department recently certified to Congress under the Nunn-McCurdy Law. The certification allows the programs to move forward, said Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Pete Aldridge, during a press roundtable May 2. The LPD-17, a program of Naval Sea Systems Command's Program Executive Office for Expeditionary Warfare, is a new class of amphibious transport dock ship incorporating advanced performance and warfighting technologies that will enhance the amphibious fleet's operational flexibility. There are four ships under contract leading to a 12-ship buy. "Ninety-five percent of the design has been completed," Aldridge said.

NASSCO Lays Keel of Sixth T-AKE Ship

wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics held a keel-laying ceremony for the sixth ship in the U.S. Navy's T-AKE program. Amelia Earhart, in honor of the first woman to fly solo, non-stop across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A keel-laying ceremony is a shipbuilding tradition that signifies an important milestone as full-scale production begins. In recognition of that milestone, event honoree, Darlene Costello, welded her initials into the keel. Costello is the deputy director for Naval Warfare in the office of under secretary of defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. Sealift Command (MSC) in the fall of 2008. The ship will be 689-feet long and displace about 41,000 metric tons when fully loaded.

Defense Department Presents Engineering Awards

Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Kenneth Krieg presented the annual Department of Defense Value Engineering Achievement Awards during a ceremony June 15 at the Pentagon. Value Engineering is a systematic process of function analysis to identify actions that reduce cost, increase quality, and improve mission capabilities across the entire spectrum of DoD systems, processes, and organizations. Sperry Marine Receives CMM Level 3 Rating on Software

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit has received a significant Process Maturity Level rating in an assessment conducted by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The assessment was performed on the software engineering processes for integrated navigation systems and ship machinery control systems. In accordance with the SEI-licensed Capability Maturity Model (CMM) based appraisal for Internal Process Improvement (IPI), the assessment team concluded that the overall Sperry Marine software engineering process was at the Defined (Level 3) Process Maturity Level.
