The New Name of Finnish Shipbuilding

The announced merger of Kvaerner Masa-Yards and Aker Finyards — both members of the Aker Yards Groups — draws to a conclusion nearly a decade of change within the Finnish shipbuilding community, while providing the technically talented and market capable company with a clear vision for the future. Long an elite member of the world's select fraternity of "high value ship" builders, the Finnish maritime community has built and maintained a leadership in several technically demanding categories — cruise shipping, LNG carriers and ice ship technology, to name but a few — despite the country's relatively small size, environmental challenges and fierce competition from lower cost competitors in the Far East Aker Yards Group recently announced the merger of Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc.

AKER FINNYARDS

Based in Rauma, Aker Finnyards recent history is indicative of the changes, which continue to sweep the Finnish maritime scene. Finnyards is owned 100 percent by Norwegian interests, part of Aker Yards, an international shipbuilding group comprising Aker Finnyards together with a German and two Norwegian shipyard groups. Aker Yards is owned by Aker RGI. Aker Finnyards' main activities are construction of specialized ships, vessels for oil and gas production and heavy offshore structures. While the shipyard's reign under Norwegian rule is relatively short, its experience and accrued expertise spans many decades and includes more than 1,500 ships built — both long series and extremely demanding one-offs.

Aker Yards to Build Missile Boat

Aker Finnyards, a part of Aker Yards, and the Finnish Navy have today signed a contract for building the fourth Hamina-class fast surface combatant worth €21.7 million for delivery summer 2006. Today there was also signed a contract of the conversion of the "Hamina", one of the previous vessels in the squadron, including installation of combat systems, at a price of €6.3 million. The above agreed implies in all 300 man years of work for the yard. President of Aker Finnyards, Yrjö Julin, says these are important contracts for the yard. "We were very pleased to sign these contracts. The Finnish Navy has been and is a very important customer for our company. The first Hamina-class vessel, the "Hamina" was built in 1998, and the second, the "Tornio" was delivered in May 2003.

Aker Finnyards Names New President

The Board of Aker Finnyards Oy has appointed Mr Jyrki Heinimaa as the new President of the Finnish shipbuilding company Aker Finnyards Oy. Heinimaa (38), LL.M., the present Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration, of the company has been employed by the company since 1996 attending first to the legal matters and since 1999 also for the financial administration. Heinimaa will for the present continue also as the CFO of the company. “I very much appreciate the honor to continue Yrjö Julin’s work at Aker Finnyards. Yrjö has done an excellent work and created a good basis for the further development of the company. I am with great interest and enthusiasm looking forward to the new challenges”, Heinimaa said.

Kronodoc, Aker Finnyards Sign Contract

Kronodoc Oy signed a purchase contract with Aker Finnyards Inc., the former Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc. In addition to the delivery of the Kronodoc product, the contract includes services to implement the Kronodoc product in document management and collaboration functions throughout Aker Finnyards` design processes; to integrate the product to existing yard systems; to migrate data from existing document management systems to Kronodoc; and to train key users and administrators in the use of the system.

Aker Finnyards Lands Cruise Ferry Order

Aker Finnyards and Estonian Hansatee Group came to an agreement for the construction of a new $150.8 million cruise ferry for the Gulf of Finland traffic. The 623 ft. (189.8 m) vessel, with a beam of 94 ft. (28.8 m) will be able to hold 2,500 passengers and 1,000 lane meters. Scheduled for delivery in May 2002, the 40,000-gt ferry will be powered by four diesel engines totaling 26,000 kW with a service speed of 22 knots.

Aker Finnyards To Build $1.5 Million Fast Surface Combatant

Aker Finnyards and the Finnish Navy have agreed on a $1.5 million contract for the construction of another Hamina-Class Fast Surface Combatant. The vessel, which will be delivered in April 2003, will have a length of 8.5 m, draft of 1.5 m and displacement of 200 tons. Comprised of aluminum and lightweight composite materials in the superstructure, the vessel's propulsion system will consist of two waterjets producing a speed of more than 30 knots.

Aker Finnyards to Convert Finnjet

Aker Finnyards and Silja Oyj Abp signed on October 23 a LOI on the docking and conversion of GTS Finnjet. The work will commence in May 2004 and means 100 man years of work for the yard. There will be considerable technical modernisation and improvement onboard, according to Central European trends. The plan for renewing the passenger spaces has been made by Partner Ship Design architects, specialised on cruise vessels. Aker Finnyards has in the recent years made conversions of Silja´s other vessels, too: Wasa Queen, Silja Europa, Silja Festival. The conversion work is estimated to six weeks. GTS Finnjet will start sailing on route Rostock-Tallinn-StPetersburg in June 2004.

Aker Yards signed LOI for three Container Carriers

B & N Nordsjöfrakt for building three container carriers. The contract, worth in all approx. EUR 150 million, implies about 1,000 man-years of work. All three vessels are planned for delivery in 2006. "We are delighted to have signed this Letter of Intent", says Jyrki Heinimaa, President of Aker Finnyards in Rauma. "These vessels will sail in heavy ice conditions during the wintertime, and Aker Yards has significant knowledge in icegoing technology, having built all of the world's three multipurpose icebreakers", Heinimaa adds. The container carriers are intended to operate on the Gulf of Bothnia, between Kemi and Oulu in Finland and Gothenburg in Sweden.

Color Line, Aker Yards Sign for Cruise Ship

Color Line AS and Aker Yards signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the order of a second ship, a sister vessel to M/S Color Fantasy, the world's largest cruise ship with car decks delivered from Aker Finnyards the 3rd of December 2004. The contract value is at the same level as for M/S Color Fantasy, approximately EUR 300 million. The agreement is subject to certain conditions, including Color Line and Aker Yards board approval. The contract is anticipated to be made effective within the second quarter of 2005. "We are extremely pleased to continue our strong relationship with Color Line by building this sister vessel to M/S Color Fantasy.” says Yrjö Julin, President of Aker Finnyards.

Aker Finnyards: Negotiations with Employee Reps Concluded

Since the beginning of 2005 Finland's three largest shipyards in Helsinki, Rauma and Turku have been working as one company, the new Aker Finnyards. As a part of the restructuring, negotiations were started on November 9 with the employee representatives to improve the productivity of the yards. The formal negotiations have now been concluded, and the number of employees that will be affected will be approximately 315. "I am very pleased with the result, and that we have come to a joint solution with the employee representatives to develop Aker Finnyards' competitiveness. For winning new orders, improving competitiveness is a prerequisite, and a daily challenge for our yard, personnel and our network of co-operation partners.

Aker Yards Signs Retrofit Contract

Aker Yards and the German TT-Line have signed a contract for retrofitting of four passenger-car ferries. The retrofit means renewing the vessels fuel systems to be more flexible and conforming to today’s demands. The project value is $9.1 million. The project will be executed on the yard in Helsinki during January-March 2006. The project will be managed by Aker Finnyards Lifecycle services, which offers comprehensive and cost efficient services to cruise and passenger ship operators. Established in 2003, the Lifecycle Services is a natural continuation of the yards long-term commitment to its customers. The target market is the whole Cruise and Ferry Operators Fleet.

Kongsberg Automation for Ferry Newbuilds

The Kongsberg Maritime DataChief C20 Integrated Automation System (IAS) has been selected for the Tallink III cruise ferry newbuild at Aker Finnyards, Rauma. This is the third vessel from Aker Finnyards for owner Estonian Tallink Group, that utilizes DataChief C20. At a length of 696 ft. (212 m) and a beam of 95 ft. (29 m) the 48,300 gt Tallink III will be one of the largest Cruise Ferries in the Baltic Sea, with capacity for 2,800 passengers and 1,130 lanemetres. The ship is powered by four diesel engines with a total power output of 26,240 kW and a service speed of 22 knots. The DataChief C20 is Kongsberg Maritime's most successful automation system to date, according to the company.

Aker Finnyards Delivers Largest Vessel In Bore Fleet

Aker Finnyards' most recent newbuild, the 11,000-dwt RoRo carrier for the Dutch company, Bore Sky BV, was christened as Norsky by Mrs. Marianne Barnabo, spouse of Mr. John Steele, non Executive Board member of P&O SN Co. The vessel, which was delivered by Aker to Bore Sky before the ceremony, will begin regular service between Continental Europe and the U.K. on the route Zeebrugge - Teesport, operated by British P&O North Sea Ferries. Designed for transporting trailers, trucks and containers, Norsky provides fast loading and unloading and is equipped with two stern ramps.

Aker Finnyards To Build $1.5 Million Fast Surface Combatant

Aker Finnyards Delivers Unique Ferry

Irish Continental Group has taken delivery of its newest vessel, the $92 million cruise ferry m.v. Ulysses, from Aker Finnyards. With 2.6 miles (4 km) of deck space for commercial vehicles and cars, and accommodation for 2,000 people, the Ulysses is the largest ferry of its kind in the world, ICG said. The vessel, which is expected to arrive at Dublin port on Sunday, will enter service on ICG's route between Dublin and Holyhead in Wales in a month's time, it said. Ulysses is 50,938 grt and stands 12 decks high, with a keel-to-mast height of 167.5 feet. Onboard features include a complex of bistro-style restaurants, two cinemas, a 500-seat traditional Irish pub, a shopping mall, a helicopter pad, and a glass-fronted passenger lift, which operates on the outside of the vessel.

Bore's Norstream Christened At Aker Finnyards

Aker Finnyards' newbuilding No. 425, the 11,500-dwt RoRo carrier for the Dutch company Bore Stream BV was recently christened Norstream by Ann von Rettig. P&O North Sea Ferries will operate the vessel, which began regular service between Continental Europe and the U.K. on the Zeebrugge-Tessport route in October. The vessel is designed mainly for transporting trailers, trucks and containers providing fast unloading and loading, and is also equipped with two stern ramps. Measuring 591 ft. (180 m), with a beam of 83 ft. (25.2 m) and draft of 21 ft. (6.5 m), the vessel moves at a speed of 20 knots powered by two medium-speed diesel engines at 18,900 kW. Norstream's sistership Norsky was delivered to the Bore Company this past June.

Aker Yards Signs Refurb Contract

Aker Yards and Silja Oy Ab have signed a contract for modernizing the two passenger-car ferries Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony. The refurbishment includes renewing the vessels passenger areas to conform to the demands of the future The project will be managed by Aker Finnyards Lifecycle services, which offers comprehensive and cost efficient services to cruise and passenger ship operators. The refurbishment will be carried out in cooperation with partners. The Turku Repair yard offers facilities, and the project means work for several turnkey contractors.

Aker Finnyards to Build Another 2500 Pax Cruise Ferry

Aker Finnyards and the Estonian Tallink Group have signed a contract worth $147 million for the building of a new cruise ferry for delivery in spring of 2004. The vessel is a repeat of Estonia’s biggest cruise ferry Romantika, which was delivered from Aker Finnyards in May 2002 and is cruising on the route between Helsinki and Tallinn. The new vessel is intended for the trade between Stockholm and Tallinn. Compared to the sister ship the now ordered vessel will be even more environmentally friendly, equipped with catalysers. Also the new vessel will have capacity for 2,500 passengers, and special attention will be paid to their comfort and luxury already when designing the vessel.

Aker Finnyards Sign Contract to Build New Cruise Vessel

Aker Finnyards and Birka Line have signed a contract for the building of a 1,800 passenger cruise vessel. The worth ca $ 155.2 million vessel to be delivered in 2004. The 581-ft. DNV`s Clean Design rule defining several environmental solutions as to the ship structures, and the Comfort Class rule securing a noiseless and vibration free environment for the passengers. In addition, the vessel of course complies with the same environmental quality standards as the already sailing Birka Princess, i.e. equipped with catalyzers and closed sewage treatment systems, with atoxic bottom painting etc. A novelty is also the energy saving automation in the cabins, which for the time being has been seen in some hotels.

Aker Constructs For SeaFrance

Aker Finnyards and SeaFrance have signed a contract worth more than $88.9 million for the construction of a new car-passenger ferry for the Dover-Calais route. Touted as the fastest and largest vessel to ever operate on that route, the 607 ft. (185 m) ferry is scheduled for a September 2001 delivery. Able to transport 1,900 passengers and 700 cars at speeds of up to 25 knots, the vessel will reportedly the fastest of its kind operating on its route; reducing crossing time to approximately one hour.

Aker Constructs Vessel Trio For Scottish Northlink

Aker Finnyards and Northlink, a joint venture of Caledonian MacBrayne and Royal Bank of Scotland, have agreed to build two passenger RoRo vessels for the ferry service from the Scottish mainland to Orkney and Shetland for $87 million. A letter of intent was also signed on a third, slightly smaller vessel worth $39.5 million. Measuring 410 ft. (125 m) with a beam of 64 ft. (19.5 m) and 12,000 gt, each vessel will have the capacity for 600 passengers in time for summer 2002.
