RoRo Vessel Runs Aground in Aklan

Philippine Coast Guard Action Center Manila received report that MV Starlite Atlantic, a roro vessel ran aground at vicinity waters of Brgy Argao, Malay, Aklan around 4:30 a.m. on January 19. Initial information from the Master of the vessel revealed that MV Starlite Atlantic with 31 crew members onboard was anchored at Caticlan Anchorage Area when its anchor chain was cut due to strong winds and big waves causing it to be dragged to its present position. The Captain will attempt to pull the vessel from its grounding position during the highest tide. coastguard.gov.ph

Operations Resume at Typhoon-stricken Port

The Philippines' Ports Authority has resumed full commercial operations at the port of Tacloban which was closed for about 12 days after Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) struck. The Ports Authority and International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) worked round-the-clock to restart operations at the port, which is expected to become the relief hub. Cargo handling equipment from ICTSI to help temporarily run the port of Tacloban until it recovers from damage caused by the storm is due to arrive today.

Passenger Medevaced from Cruise Ship in Aklan

A 67-year old ailing Chinese passenger was successfully evacuated from a cruise ship by the joint team of Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Boracay and Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group at the vicinity waters of Malay, Aklan last Thursday, October 17. Coast Guard Station (CGS) Boracay received an information around 6:10 a.m. of the said through VHF radio from Captain Pentti Silvennoinen, Master of M/S Superstar Gemini, a cruise ship from Xiamen, China anchored at Caticlan Anchorage Area, Barangay Caticlan, Malay, Aklan. According to Capt. Silvennoinen, one of their passengers identified as Xu Yao, needs immediate medical attention. Investigation revealed that around 5:30 a.m. on the same date when Yao suddenly collapsed in his cabin.
