Carnival Signs MOA for First New Cruise Ships Built in China

Carnival Corporation & plc has announced that its cruise joint venture in China has signed a non-binding memorandum of agreement (MOA) to order the industry’s first new cruise ships built in China for the Chinese market. The MOA is subject to several conditions including closing of the joint venture, financing and other key terms. Carnival Corp. Appoints Chairman in China

Carnival Corporation & plc today announced that Roger Chen has been appointed chairman in China, effective January 1, 2016. A native of China, Chen will be based in Shanghai and lead all government relations and port development, while also supporting the company’s joint ventures in China. In this new role, Chen will have responsibility for representing all of Carnival Corporation’s brands in China to continue growing the company’s presence and scale in the region. Carnival Confirms Chinese JV Cruise

In an industry first, the Miami-based  Carnival Corp. will develop a multi-ship domestic Chinese cruise brand with Chinese partners. Carnival, the world’s largest cruise company, formed a joint venture with China State Shipbuilding Corp., the largest shipbuilder in China, and China Investment Corp., a sovereign wealth fund with $740 billion in assets. Carnival Chief Executive Officer Arnold Donald formalized the accord Wednesday in a meeting in London with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is on a state visit to the U.K., according to a statement released by Carnival. All parties will collectively invest $4 billion into the venture in the first 10 years, Carnival Corp Chief Operating Officer Alan Buckelew said.

Market Growth to Bring More Carnival Ships to China

The Chinese cruise market, expected to become the world’s largest based on surging demand for cruise vacations by Chinese travelers, will see the arrival of two additional cruise brands in 2017 as Carnival Corporation & plc further expand its operations in the nation. Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA Cruises will join Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises in the Chinese market, making Carnival Corporation the first company to operate four brands in China, the company said today in announcing its plans for further development in China.

Carnival Announces Leadership Changes

Carnival Corporation & plc announced that Michael Ungerer, currently President of Germany-based AIDA Cruises, has been appointed Chief Operations Officer-Shared Services for Carnival Asia, effective September 1, 2015. Ungerer will relocate to Shanghai, China, and directly support each of the Carnival Corporation brands operating in the region to leverage the company's industry-leading presence and scale in the region. Ungerer will jointly report to Michael Thamm, CEO of the Costa Group, which includes AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises, and to a China steering committee comprising the Carnival Corporation brands operating in the region. In addition, longtime AIDA senior executive Felix Eichhorn has been named president of AIDA Cruises. He will also report to Thamm.

Carnival, China Merchants Sign MOU

MOU will explore both Port & Destination Development and Ship-Owning joint ventures with the goal of potentially launching China’s first world-class domestic cruise brand. Carnival Corporation & plc has  signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China Merchants Group (CMG) to explore the possibility of two joint ventures designed to accelerate the development and growth of the overall cruise industry in China. Ship-Owning Joint Venture: Carnival Corporation and CMG will explore a joint venture that would own and operate its own cruise ships as part of the first-ever domestic Chinese cruise line specifically targeted to the Chinese market.

Carnival Appoint First Chief Maritime Officer

Alan Buckelew, currently the president and CEO of Princess Cruises, is being appointed to the newly created role of Chief Operations Officer of Carnival Corporation & plc effective December 1, 2013, reporting to President and CEO Arnold Donald. Princess Cruises Choose Name of New Liner at Keel-laying

Princess Cruises decide to name new cruise ship 'Regal Princess' as Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy lay the keel down. Following a traditional blessing by a priest, the ship's keel – which weighs approximately 500 tons – was moved into position by a huge crane onto the keel blocks. The computer-guided maneuver took only minutes, belying the more than 2 million man hours that will ultimately go into building the vessel. The 3,600-passenger, 141,000-ton ship will remain in the building dock until its float-out next summer. The vessel, a sister ship to Royal Princess, will debut in Spring 2014.

Italian Shipyard Launches Its Largest Ship

Fincantieri launches 'Royal Princess' the new flagship of Princess Cruises's fleet at its Monfalcone shipyard. "Royal Princess", at 141,000 gross tons, 330 metres long and 38 metres wide, is the largest ship ever built by Fincantieri. It has 1,780 cabins, of which 1,438 have balconies (81% of the total), and is able to accommodate 3,600 passengers, with total capacity for over 5,600 people including crew. The ship will be able to adapt to every possible type of cruise, operating from Alaska to Australia, even in environmentally protected areas where navigation is restricted.
