Bethel Named Honorary President, Society of Maritime Industries

Archie Bethel, CBE, has succeeded Alan Johnston, CBE, as Honorary President of the Society of Maritime Industries at the Society’s Board meeting today. Archie Bethel is Divisional Chief Executive of Babcock International Group plc’s marine and technology division. In welcoming Bethel to his role, the Society’s Chairman, Peter French said “I am delighted Archie has agreed to be our President. Bethel joined Babcock in January 2004 and was appointed Chief Executive of Marine on its formation in mid June 2007.

New President for Society of Maritime Industries

Marine Industries are Major Contributor to UK Economy

The UK’s marine industries contribute £3.7 billion to the UK economy each year, according to figures released by the Marine Industries Leadership Council. Comprising well over 5,000 companies, the marine industries employ around 120,000 people across the UK and have a combined turnover of £10 billion. With more than 20 per cent growth in shipbuilding and marine leisure between 2006 and 2008, future growth in the marine industries is expected to amount to billions of pounds for the UK through expanding international markets and marine renewable energy. "These figures highlight the importance of the marine industry to the UK economy and to the skills and jobs market.

BAE Systems Barrow Shipyard Shakeup

According to a report from the North-West Evening Mail, the Barrow Shipyard is heading for a shakeup which will see it rejoined with BAE’s surface shipbuilding yards. The report said that Alan Johnston, the managing director of BAE Surface Ships, revealed the changes during a lecture on Future Surface Ships at The Forum in Barrow on Oct. 28. UK’s Royal Navy Launches HMS Dragon

The Royal Navy’s latest addition to the Type 45 destroyer fleet, to be called HMS Dragon, pulled into the Clyde from BVT’s shipyard at Govan on Nov. 17, 2008. As well as providing air defense over a wide area, including for the future aircraft carriers, the Type 45s will be able to conduct a variety of operations. They will be able to carry up to sixty Royal Marines Commandos and their equipment and operate a Chinook sized helicopter from the flight deck. “I am delighted to be here today to witness the launch of our latest destroyer Dragon.

VT and BAE Agree on Shipbuilding JV

VT Group has finalized its shipbuilding joint venture with BAE Systems. Under the agreement -- the terms of which are substantially unchanged from those set out in the framework agreement in July 2007 -- the BVT Surface Fleet Ltd joint venture will be owned 45 percent by VT and 55 percent by BAE Systems. The joint venture, under which VT has an option to sell its stake to BAE for at least $745 million, is key to VT's attempts to focus entirely on support services, leaving behind its origins as a shipbuilder, Reuters said. Last July, gave the go-ahead for plans to build two aircraft carriers, triggering the deal to merge operations at BAE and VT, 's two largest shipbuilders.

Center Praised for Helping Industry

The man at the helm of the biggest shipbuilding company has praised a North-East marine design facility for its efforts to tackle a skills issue that threatens to subdue the region's thriving sector, the Northern Echo said. Alan Johnston, chief executive of BVT Surface Fleet - a joint venture between BAE Systems and VT Shipbuilding - hailed the Marine Design Centre, in , as playing a potentially crucial role in recruitment and training.
