Jan De Nul Group has completed, in collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions and GoodFuels, 2,000 hours using 100% renewable second generation Biofuel Oil (BFO) on board the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Alexander von Humboldt. The milestone represents the longest continuous use of 100% sustainable marine biofuel in the maritime industry, the partners say.The Alexander von Humboldt was refueled at various stages over the last nine months, with reduced fossil CO2 emissions by 85%.

Jan De Nul Group, the international  dredging company, said that the maintenance dredging works in the marinas of Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast got underway.“What makes this project so unique, are the CO2-reducing measures taken by Jan De Nul Group. An example for the industry and future dredging works in Europe,” said a press release from the company. "Its an example for the industry and future dredging works in Europe."The maintenance dredging works in Nieuwpoort entail the dredging works in the port access channel and in the marinas. A large part of the dredging works are executed by means of the Cutter Suction Dredger Hendrik Geeraert and the split hopper barges Magellano and Verrazzano.Earlier this year, Jan De Nul Group announced its commitment to emit 15% less CO2 on this project.

Four magnificent tall ships  will come to Hamburg for the 830th Hamburg Port Anniversary from 10 to 12 May – Alexander von Humboldt II, Kruzenshtern, Sedov and Mir.The Queens of the oceans will participate in the grand arrival and departure parades in the heart of the city, on the Friday and Sunday respectively, and invite visitors to look around on board, said a press release from Germany's largest port.Alongside these amazing tall ships, the Hamburg Port Anniversary will be a meeting place for some 300 vessels of all kinds, including many classic sailing vessels that will also be open to visitors.The Alexander von Humboldt II is currently Germany’s largest operational sail training ship, with length overall 66 metres.

The world of dredging is an ever changing and endlessly fascinating niche of the global marine industry, an indispensable activity essential to keeping world commerce flowing. For insight on recent trends we visited last month with René Kolman, Secretary General, International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC), for his take on a world of dredging challenges and opportunities. Marlink has been chosen by the CMA CGM Group, the world’s third largest container shipping group, to upgrade the majority of its fleet to WaveCall, Marlink’s standardized Ku-band VSAT service. In combination with the XChange solutions platform from Astrium Services, WaveCall will be installed on over 35 CMA CGM vessels, including the CMA CGM Marco Polo, CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt and CMA CGM Jules Verne, one of the largest container vessels in the world. Fugro Seastar AS announced that CMA CGM Marco Polo has been fitted with Marinestar maneuvering system to assist in berthing and navigation. The satellite aided navigation technology is based on composite GPS and GLONASS constellations and measures precise speeds at the bow and the stern together with quay distances to assist the vessel safely to the berth. The Marinestar system provides speed and heading information to a higher level of accuracy than conventional navigational aids such as doppler log and gyro compass. In addition to its navigation and berthing functions, Marinestar Maneuvering System is able to measure vessel trim fore and aft trim dynamically whilst underway at sea.

The CMA CGM Jules Verne made her maiden call in Le Havre on June 20 at the Terminal de France in Port 2000. She is the world biggest French-flag containership. With a transport capacity of 16,020 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), she joins the other sister-ships ordered by CMA CGM shipping line and named after great sea explorers (real or virtual ones). Owing to its Port 2000 equipment, HAROPA-port of Le Havre is one of the very few ports in the north-European range to be able to receive this new giant of the seas, 396 meters long and 54 meters broad.

The CMA CGM Jules Verne arrived on June 3 at Marseille for an exceptional call and was welcomed by thousands of local people and employees from CMA CGM’s Head Office. Her inauguration was a fitting celebration to mark the 35th anniversary of a Group that was founded in Marseille by Jacques R. Saadé in 1978.
