Sea Cloud's New Tall Ship is Taking Shape

Sea Cloud Cruises' third tall ship, Sea Cloud Spirit, is taking shape in Vigo, Spain. Interior outfitting is underway as specialists from the Polish shipbuilding company Chorén have erected the approximately 54-meter-high aft mast for the 138-meter-long, three-masted sailing ship due to enter service later this year. Hopper Dredge Sails 2,000 Hours on Biofuel

Jan De Nul Group has completed, in collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions and GoodFuels, 2,000 hours using 100% renewable second generation Biofuel Oil (BFO) on board the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Alexander von Humboldt. The milestone represents the longest continuous use of 100% sustainable marine biofuel in the maritime industry, the partners say.The Alexander von Humboldt was refueled at various stages over the last nine months, with reduced fossil CO2 emissions by 85%.

Jan De Nul Cuts CO2 in Dredging Work

Jan De Nul Group, the international  dredging company, said that the maintenance dredging works in the marinas of Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast got underway.“What makes this project so unique, are the CO2-reducing measures taken by Jan De Nul Group. An example for the industry and future dredging works in Europe,” said a press release from the company. "Its an example for the industry and future dredging works in Europe."The maintenance dredging works in Nieuwpoort entail the dredging works in the port access channel and in the marinas. A large part of the dredging works are executed by means of the Cutter Suction Dredger Hendrik Geeraert and the split hopper barges Magellano and Verrazzano.Earlier this year, Jan De Nul Group announced its commitment to emit 15% less CO2 on this project.

Queens of the Oceans Come for Hamburg's Port Anniversary

Four magnificent tall ships  will come to Hamburg for the 830th Hamburg Port Anniversary from 10 to 12 May – Alexander von Humboldt II, Kruzenshtern, Sedov and Mir.The Queens of the oceans will participate in the grand arrival and departure parades in the heart of the city, on the Friday and Sunday respectively, and invite visitors to look around on board, said a press release from Germany's largest port.Alongside these amazing tall ships, the Hamburg Port Anniversary will be a meeting place for some 300 vessels of all kinds, including many classic sailing vessels that will also be open to visitors.The Alexander von Humboldt II is currently Germany’s largest operational sail training ship, with length overall 66 metres.

The world of dredging is an ever changing and endlessly fascinating niche of the global marine industry, an indispensable activity essential to keeping world commerce flowing. For insight on recent trends we visited last month with René Kolman, Secretary General, International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC), for his take on a world of dredging challenges and opportunities. In true Dutch fashion René Kolman is refreshingly forthright. Kolman assumed the mantle of leadership at IADC more than seven years ago, coming to the post from the landscape and garden trade association business.

In order to improve the reliability of its service, CMA CGM has decided to review the port coverage of FAL 1. As from m/v CMA CGM JULES VERNE voy. 115 FLE, FAL 1 service will no longer call the port of Zeebrugge. Last vessel calling Zeebrugge will be m/v CMA CGM VASCO DE GAMA voy. 113FLE on August 29th, 2016. As from m/v CMA CGM ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT voy. 109 FLE, FAL 1 service will no longer call the port of Dalian. Last vessel calling Dalian will be m/v CMA CGM MAGELLAN voy. 107FLE (ETA Dalian on September 16th, 2016).

Travel Aboard One of the World’s Largest Containerships

CMA CGM Group is now offering genuine cruises aboard its biggest vessels, the new 16,020 TEUs containerships, such as the CMA CGM MARCO POLO or the CMA CGM ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT. These giants of the seas (365 meters long, which is equivalent to more than 4 soccer fields), are among the largest vessels of their kind in the world. The company’s containerships offer their passengers five cabins with private bathrooms and their own living-room. Passengers can also enjoy the large range of facilities provided on board, such as a theater for movie-fans, a library for readers, or a fitness room for the most energetic ones. During summer time, they will all have a chance to benefit from the outdoor swimming-pool.

CMA CGM Add New VSAT Services from Marlink

Marlink has been chosen by the CMA CGM Group, the world’s third largest container shipping group, to upgrade the majority of its fleet to WaveCall, Marlink’s standardized Ku-band VSAT service. In combination with the XChange solutions platform from Astrium Services, WaveCall will be installed on over 35 CMA CGM vessels, including the CMA CGM Marco Polo, CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt and CMA CGM Jules Verne, one of the largest container vessels in the world. As CMA CGM’s fleet covers global trade routes, extensive Ku-band coverage was a key requirement when choosing WaveCall.

CMA CGM Marco Polo Fitted with Marinestar

Fugro Seastar AS announced that CMA CGM Marco Polo has been fitted with Marinestar maneuvering system to assist in berthing and navigation. The satellite aided navigation technology is based on composite GPS and GLONASS constellations and measures precise speeds at the bow and the stern together with quay distances to assist the vessel safely to the berth. The Marinestar system provides speed and heading information to a higher level of accuracy than conventional navigational aids such as doppler log and gyro compass. In addition to its navigation and berthing functions, Marinestar Maneuvering System is able to measure vessel trim fore and aft trim dynamically whilst underway at sea.

Largest French-flag Vessel Called in at Le Havre

The CMA CGM Jules Verne made her maiden call in Le Havre on June 20 at the Terminal de France in Port 2000. She is the world biggest French-flag containership. With a transport capacity of 16,020 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), she joins the other sister-ships ordered by CMA CGM shipping line and named after great sea explorers (real or virtual ones). Owing to its Port 2000 equipment, HAROPA-port of Le Havre is one of the very few ports in the north-European range to be able to receive this new giant of the seas, 396 meters long and 54 meters broad.

CMA CGM Jules Verne, the world’s largest containership (16,000 twenty-foot equivalent units), and sailing under the French flag was officially inaugurated by French President François Hollande in Marseille, on June 4. The CMA CGM Jules Verne arrived on June 3 at Marseille for an exceptional call and was welcomed by thousands of local people and employees from CMA CGM’s Head Office. Her inauguration was a fitting celebration to mark the 35th anniversary of a Group that was founded in Marseille by Jacques R. Saadé in 1978.

First Voyage for CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt

CMA CGM Marco Polo's sistership, enters CMA CGM’s Asia - Europe Trade. The CMA CGM Group announced that the CMA CGM Alexander  Von  Humboldt, second of the world's largest and state of the art containership’s series, begins its first voyage today, Friday, April 19th in Pusan, South Korea. Built by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in South Korea, this giant of the seas, owned by CMA CGM, displays exceptional dimensions: 396 meters long, 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters and sails under the U.K. flag.
