Shipbuilder All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) said it has launched an aluminum catamaran built to patrol Texas state and federal waters for the law enforcement division of Texas Parks and Wildlife. The 80’ x 27’ (OAL) Captain Murchison features twin CAT C18 ACERT D Engines, with Hamilton Jet HM 521 waterjets and is built to USCG Subchapter T standards. It is also the first vessel in North America to feature Hamilton Jet’s innovative Advanced Vessel Control (AVX) system. The new AVX features include both a station keeping and a JETanchor positioning system.

(AAM) announced it has won a contract to build a pair of quad-jet sister vessels to expand Seward, Alaska-based Major Marine Tours’ fleet of wildlife and glacier cruise vessels that visit Kenai Fjords National Park. (AAM) has been named the West Coast shipyard by Birdon America, Inc., for Phase I of a contract to perform a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) on a number of United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) fleet of Motor Life Boats (MLB).AAM is currently working on two MLBs at its shop, with a plan to ramp up to eight MLB vessels each year during Phase II. Birdon America was awarded the prime contract to perform Service Life Extension work on all MLBs in the U.S. Coast Guard’s fleet.The current in-service MLBs were designed by the USCG and built from 1997 to 2003.

The Duke University Marine Lab (DUML) is a hydrofoil-assisted catamaran from Teknicraft Design. Measuring 77 x 26.5 ft. the vessel is based on a pair of successful Teknicraft Design vessels AAM built for NOAA.The vessel is powered by twin Tier 3 CAT C18 “D” ACERT engines, rated at 803 bhp/2100 rpm and providing a cruising speed of 24 knots. Kitsap Transit Approves $15 Million Contract for Two All American Marine High Speed Low Wake Ferries. Kitsap Transit’s board recently approved a $15 million contract with All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) for the construction of two additional Rich Passage-class passenger ferries. The new ferries will be designed to operate on Kitsap Transit’s current cross sound ferry route between Bremerton and downtown Seattle. The design of the new vessels is based upon the successful ultra low wake All American Marine built, Rich Passage 1. AAM was tapped as the sole source to build the vessels as the licensed builder of Teknicraft Design hulls in North America.

A primer on the way forward for alternative fuels for marine propulsion. By now, many of us have been passed by a garbage truck, taken a ride on an airport bus or hailed a taxi cab that is clearly labeled by their respective marketing departments that these vehicles are powered by clean burning natural gas. Even now in our own maritime industry, some trendy operators are looking to make the case for liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion systems, others are opting for hybrid-electric solutions, and some are even aiming for full electric configurations.

Despite of some of the lowest fuel prices experienced in the last eight years, demand for ferry construction is at a seemingly all time high. The focus on building new ferries kicked off in early 2013 and the sustained interest is the continued result of an unleashing of pent up demand. Fleets have been aging and infrastructure needs to be built up in order to accommodate the future demand for commuter ferry travel once fuel prices return to and surpass their once familiar norms.

All bets would have been lost if one was to predict that I would never find one of the most advanced and modern workboats in the heart of the Norwegian Fjordlands. Sure enough, if you make the trek to Flam through nearly 50 tunnels in between the prominent towns of Bergen and Oslo, you will behold such a craft.
