American Climate Project Invests in Kongsberg Technology

Following a contract signed on May 15, 2013, echosounders from Kongsberg will play a part in the American Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), for the monitoring of subsea life along both U.S. coasts. OOI is a cable-based array of scientific sensors designed to monitor the marine habitat. Everything from fish and plant life, to chemical, physical and geological changes will be measured. “Given the global climate changes, it is vital for researchers to learn as much as possible about ocean life and any changes that are taking place.

RFQ is First in Two-Step Process to Find Developers to Repurpose America’s Flagship. With all the buzz surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, it’s full steam ahead to give the greatest American ocean liner a new lease on life as a 21st Century waterfront destination. The SS United States Redevelopment Project (SSUSRP) is proud to announce the release of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) as part of an aggressive process to identify a developer to repurpose America’s flagship and one of the most historic vessels afloat. The SS United States, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its maiden voyage this year, remains the largest passenger vessel ever constructed in the United States.

Renewed Effort to Save SS United States

As momentum builds for the effort to save and repurpose the greatest American ocean liner ever built, the SS United States Redevelopment Project (SSUSRP) announced that it has named New Canaan Advisors LLC (NCA) as real estate advisors to a growing team leading this exciting redevelopment program. New Canaan Advisors will assist the SSUSRP on a number of aspects related to transforming the historic ship into a stationary, multi-purpose waterfront destination. The SS United States, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its maiden voyage this year, remains the largest passenger vessel ever constructed in the United States. At nearly 1,000 feet long, she remains the fastest ocean liner to cross the North Atlantic and one of the last surviving of the great 20th Century liners.

MarAd’s Schubert Resigns

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced the resignation of Captain William G. Schubert, Maritime Administrator of the Department’s Maritime Administration.
