Money Laundering: Not Just for Drug Cartels Anymore

Richard J. Paine, Sr.

The dirty money can and does wash ashore on the waterfront. Despite all the jokes about having a washing machine full of soapy hundred dollar bills, the U.S. Government takes money laundering very, very seriously. Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws include substantial fines and possible prison time and places the onus for recognizing and reporting money laundering squarely on the shoulders of financial institutions. And yet, we don’t necessarily associate ‘dirty money’ with the mundane world of moving cargo or people from point ‘a’ to point ‘b.’ If so, that’s probably a mistake.

Biofouling Foiled: UV Light Harnessed for Biofouling Control

(Photo courtesy of Adrian Round, Dir. of Observatory Operations, ONC)

Since the first deployment of in-situ monitoring instrumentation, biofouling has been a problem. Without an effective solution, people have historically had to accept the limits biofouling imposes on ocean sensing work, with significant repercussions. When instrumentation is deployed in-situ, the value of the data taken during the deployment corresponds with the longevity: information gleaned from a longer deployment is often more useful than information from one of a shorter term.

Alaska Marine Line Alters Fuel Surcharge

Beginning on February 2, 2014 Alaska Marine Lines (AML) said it will utilize a different method for calculating fuel surcharge related to pick up, delivery and trucking in the Lower 48 and Alaska. Prior to this change AML has charged the same FSC for trucking and barge transportation. The cost of fuel for trucking can vary greatly compared to ocean transportation. AML trucking services are primarily provided by contracted owner/operators. According to AML, the inland fuel surcharge more closely reflects the amount it pays for the trucking service that is purchased on behalf of its customers. The Inland FSC will be adjusted weekly using the Federal Energy Information website to determine fuel price.

Hydralift Skeg Use Gaining Speed

A device that increases the efficiency of barges is gaining in popularity on the West Coast, especially for Seattle to Alaska and Southeast Alaska runs. Many people report that Hydralift skegs substantially increase the efficiency of towed barges. This results in either increased towing speed or reduced fuel consumption because the horsepower required to tow at the same speed decreases. The Lynden Companies, Alaska Railbelt Marine (ARM) and Alaska Marine Lines (AML), have several barges with Hydralift skegs and another currently under construction. They are using the barges on Seattle to Alaska runs and runs within Southeast Alaska. Western Towboat Company, Inc., which does all the towing for ARM and AML, has two gravel barges with Hydralift skegs themselves.

A firefighting tug from Petersburg and a Coast Guard cutter hosed the blaze through the night. The firefighting tug continued to spray water on the fire Tuesday morning alongside the loaded barge, the Daily Sitka Sentinel. Coast Guard Lt.
