Coast Guard Monitors Grounded Barge
According to reports, the Coast Guard is monitoring a 110-ft. The barge was anchored when it broke free of its anchor line sometime during the night. Heavy winds and surf forced the barge onto a rocky cobble beach 1,000 yards east of the airport. The Marine Safety Detachment contacted Swenson Maritime Transportation who was in charge of the barge. They informed the Coast Guard that they were preparing to re-float the barge on the next high tide. The Swenson Maritime Transportation vessel Arch I and the Amak Towing vessel Kodiak King attempted to pull the barge free. Attempts will be made to re-float the Ava Lynn during high tide later this week. The Coast Guard is working with the Swenson Maritime Transportation, the Department of Natural Resources and the land owner Koniag Inc.
USCG Rescues Disabled Fishing Vessel
A fishing crew is back on land today after a fouled anchor line stranded them about 115 miles east of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Saturday. Initially, the four-person crew aboard the 61-foot fishing vessel Angela Michelle contacted the Sector Boston Command Center when their line became wrapped in the ship's rudder and propeller. Rescue crews from the Coast Guard Cutter Legare, a 270-foot Medium Endurance Cutter from Portsmouth, Virginia, arrived on scene and took the vessel in tow toward Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Load Cells for Offshore Mooring Project
French maritime engineering specialist Iroise Mer used a 50 ton Straightpoint Radiolink plus (RLP) load cell during a refit of a tanker mooring system located 500m off the Corsica coast, recently. Iroise Mer's job was to update the site, comprising four different mooring lines, complete with anchors, chains and concrete deadweights, and all existing components had to be removed and new ones installed. The RLP was used to measure pre-tension up to 30 ton to check new anchors were properly installed into the seabed.

New Bourbon Training Center Asia
On Nov. 7 Bourbon inaugurated its Training Center Asia and its AHTS simulator in Singapore in the premises of Bourbon Offshore Asia. The opening of this second Bourbon Training Center in Asia follows the opening of the Manila’s (Philippines) center in October 2007 dedicated to Dynamic Positioning (DP). This Bourbon Training Center includes an AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessel) simulator that represents a technological advance and an opportunity for Bourbon and the marine industry as a whole to raise its operational, safety and quality standards. The Bourbon Training Center Asia aims to train all AHTS crew members of Bourbonr who are based in Asia. It is designed to provide seamen with the theoretical knowledge and practical training in anchor handling operations.

The Coast Guard Cutter William Trump was commissioned during a ceremony at Coast Guard Sector Key West Saturday Jan. 24, 2015. The Trump is the 11th fast response cutter in the Coast Guard fleet. Valentine Receives New Lay Barge
Valentine Maritime’s new derrick equipped pipe laying barge has accommodation for 300 people and a 1,600-ton crane mounted on a 120 by 31.7 meter (393.6X104-foot) barge. VM’s DLB1600 was built over a three-year period at the Nanjing Tianshun Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., in China. Registered in Panama, the barge has now been delivered to the Abu Dubai-based owners for work in the Arabian Gulf. The fully revolving 1,600 MT crane is electrically operated with a 70-meter main hook boom and a total of 76.9 meters to the tip of the auxiliary hook boom. The barge is equipped with pipe lay gear capable of laying 4-inch to 60-inch outside diameter pipe to depths of 300 meters.
ABB Makes 5 km Subsea Operations Safe
Power and automation technology group ABB will provide the technology that will help three vessels safely carry out construction and maintenance tasks up to 5 kilometers under water. The vessels will be equipped with ABB’s OCTOPUS software that uses sensors and the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP) to interpret weather conditions, allowing the crew to make informed decisions during sensitive operations. The ships will be built for Ultra Deep Solutions at CSIC Huangpu Wuchang Shipbuilding Company Limited and China Merchants Heavy Industry.
Two rescued from Galveston Jetty
A Coast Guard aircrew plucked 2 men from the south Galveston Jetty Saturday morning, after their sailboat lost steering and ran into the rocks. At 9:06 a.m., the crew of the 27-foot sailboat called Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders for help. While they were on the phone, the sailboat’s anchor line parted and they were headed for the rocks with 15 to 20-knot winds. The watchstanders sent a Station Galveston boat crew to assist them, but they were up against the rocks before the station arrived. They were able to get on the jetty.
Maersk Supply Service Wins Contract With Quadrant Energy
Maersk Master and Maersk Mariner, Maersk Supply Service’s two first Starfish-class anchor handling vessels built in 2017, will be on contract with Quadrant Energy in Western Australia, commencing March 2018. Four Rescued From Disabled Fishing Vessel
On January 8, Coast Guard Cutter, Dependable, homeported in Cape May, N.J., received tasking from the First Coast Guard District to assist a fishing vessel that was disabled and adrift approximately 150 miles east of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. The 44-ft. disabled fishing vessel, West Head, had set out from Portland, Maine on Monday, January 5, enroute to Stouts Swell. Amidst bad weather, the crew decided to lay on the anchor on Wednesday and ride out the storm. During the night, while the crew was asleep, the vessel took a wave that crashed over the bow and knocked out the windows to the wheelhouse, destroying most of their electronics and rendering them unable to continue their voyage. The winds were reported at 60 knots sustained, with 20 to 40 foot seas.

OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.
New Anchor Handling Routine in HYPACK
HYPACK Inc. announced the release of a new Anchor Handling Routine for the offshore construction market. Hydrographic and survey software company HYPACK, Inc said it has used its in-house expertise and input from a world leading Survey Company to design and develop the new Anchor Handling Routine. that allows both rig and anchor handling vessels (tugs) operators to graphically display the status and location of anchors and their cables, track their movement and deployment, and send the anchor locations to the anchor handling vessel operators.
Updated ShipArrestor System Delivered to NCA
An improved and upgraded version of the Miko Marine ShipArrestor system has been delivered to the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA). The system has been developed to give nations the ability to protect their coastlines from the danger of ships that have lost engine power and from the pollution that can result when they run aground. The ShipArrestor system uses a specially designed parachute-shaped sea anchor that is connected to a drifting ship by helicopter and secured without any need for crew involvement.
MTNW Installs Anchor Winch Monitor for KHAN Offshore
Measurement Technology Northwest (MTNW) announced successful Anchor Winch Tension Monitoring system installation and commissioning on the KH-A1 Accommodation Crane Barge. KH-A1 is owned and operated by KHAN Offshore, an engineering, construction and service company based in Geoje, Korea in partnership with Prime Sources Limited, based in Lagos, Nigeria. This vessel currently supports Chevron Nigeria Limited’s operations. The project called for eight RL-20 running line tensiometers, and four dual winch displays, to monitor the anchor winch lines.
Pirates Release Tanker and Crew in Gulf of Guinea
Product tanker MT Barrett has been released and all crew are safe following a six-day piracy incident in the Gulf of Guinea, U.K. based Union Maritime has confirmed. Union Maritime said it lost communications with its 11,999-dwt product tanker while the vessel was at anchor off Benin, West Africa on the morning of January 10, after which the company immediately implemented its emergency response plan and alerted regional maritime authorities and other vessels. A resolution process began when the pirates holding the MT Barrett made contact with the Union Maritime late on January 12.
MTNW Supports Frontier Drilling
Measurement Technology NW (MTNW) has recently completed a contract to provide installation, calibration and commissioning on an eight-point mooring monitoring system for Frontier’s drill ship, Duchess, off the coast of Nigeria. The new running line tensiometer and LCI-90 mooring monitoring system provides visibility into line tensions which will support mooring and rig movement monitoring. The Duchess is a 475 ft by 75 ft vessel which needs to stay centered over an offshore oil-well for months on end despite sea states and drilling activity.
First ShipArrestor Delivered
Following a full product trial in New Zealand, the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) signed its acceptance of the first of two ShipArrestor systems from Miko Marine, making Norway the first country with a system that gives it the ability to protect its shores from the danger of drifting oil tankers and from the disastrous pollution that can result when they run aground. ShipArrestor was put through a complete customer acceptance trial in Tasman Bay, New Zealand using chartered helicopters and vessels.
