Babcock Delivers World's Largest LNG Bunker Supply Vessel
Babcock International is celebrating the completion of its âfirst of its kindâ and the worldâs largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker supply vessel, M.V. Kairos, as it is delivered to Babcock Schulte Energy (BSE).BSE is a 50:50 joint venture between Babcock and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM)."This achievement follows the success in meeting a series of critical programme milestones after initial ship award in December 2016 and highlights the strength of the relationship between the two organisations," said a press release from the UK-based company.A major point in any shipbuilding project, the first cut of steel was completed in November 2017 at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.
Schulte's PRONAV Acquisition Greenlighted
The Hamburg-based Schulte Group said it has received clearance by the German Federal Cartel Office for the acquisition of the LNG specialist PRONAV. With this strategic move, the family-owned ship owner and manager continues to increase its capabilities and capacity in the growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. Through the acquisition of PRONAV, the Schulte Group has increased the number of vessels under full management in its third-party management fleet by six additional LNG carriers (LNGC). At present, the Schulte Group provides full management for three LNGC and crew management for 21 LNGC. Five LNGCs with a capacity of 173âŚ
Shipping Companies May Adopt LNG Faster Than Expected
Infrastructure among top hurdles for LNG marine fuel adoption. The shipping industry may adopt liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel faster than expected because of stricter environmental regulations that target carbon dioxide emission, according to an executive at maritime agency Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM). The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulation enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2013 will require newly built ships to emit less carbon dioxide (CO2) and that will drive shippers to move toward LNG as a fuel when placing orders for new vessels, said Angus Campbell, corporate director energy projects at BSM. "CO2 is the new reality for shipping," Campbell told Reuters in an interview.
Bernhard Schulte, Babcock Team-up to develop GSV Vessel
Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), a leading global maritime services company, and Babcock International Group, the UKâs leading engineering support services company, are collaborating to develop a ground-breaking Gas Supply Vessel (GSV). The 7,500m³ vessel, which will be used for the LNG fuelling of ships, including ferries, containers, cruise vessels and other shore-based gas consumers in the Baltic Sea, is the first vessel of its kind to utilise Babcockâs market leading FGSV0 technology. BSM and Babcock have developed the patent pending FGSV0 technology to deliver LNG from the GSV into the receiving vessel with zero emissions to the environment during normal operations, greatly minimising environmental impact.
LNG Fuel is Not a Cure-all Solution
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is not a panacea to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and its increasing use as a marine fuel could be worse for the environment than burning heavy fuel oil, said Ian Adams, the former CEO of the International Bunker Industry Association. âWhilst it is well documented that LNG is an excellent solution for reducing SOx and NOx emissions, I am dismayed to see it being promoted as a solution for reducing GHGs,â Adams said, in stark contrast to claims that the use of LNG as a marine fuel can reduce the industryâs CO2 emissions by as much as 75 percent. LNG Fuel: The Gamechanger that Cannot be Ignored
The move to LNG as a fuel is a game changer which cannot be ignored, said Angus Campbell, Managing Director of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement UK, (BSM), speaking at Gastech in Singapore today. âIndependent industry predictions indicate that the use of LNG as a bunker fuel offers opportunities for early movers to secure a market leading position ashore and afloat, and global LNG fuelling will become a mainstream option. âIt has happened before,â he said. âWind gave way to coal and coal in its turn gave way to oil. Mr Campbell identified that this step change will also have a major impact on the refuelling of vessels, requiring a sophisticated supply chain, dealing with simultaneous operations and other factors not traditionally associated with bunkering in the LNG sector.

Shippers Must Reduce Costs, Boost Efficiency
So whatâs keeping ship operators awake at night these days? Plenty, it seems. Sluggish recovery from a lingering worldwide recession, unsustainable debt loads, endemic overcapacity in most shipping trades, punishing freight rates, rising costs of fuel and regulatory compliance and a lingering sense that ships are not running as efficiently as they could. The last two topics â reducing fuel costs while complying with emission regulations and improving ship operating efficiency â will take center stage at SHIPPINGInsight 2014, scheduled for Sept. 30 â Oct. 2 in Stamford, Conn.
Australia to Review Indonesia-bound Vessels
The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) and the Australian Defense Force have commenced a joint review into Australian vessels which entered Indonesian waters contrary to Australian Government policy, during operations conducted in association with Operation Sovereign Borders.
