Horizon Names Hamlin EVP & COO

Bill Hamlin, Executive Vice President And Chief Operating Officer.

Horizon Lines, Inc. has announced that William A. Hamlin has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In his new role, Mr. Hamlin will continue to report to Sam Woodward, President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Hamlin joined Horizon Lines in March 2011 as Senior Vice President of Operations. His responsibilities include ocean transportation services, inland transportation, terminals, equipment management, maintenance, network management, labor relations, security, safety and environmental.

AAPA ‘Trade Routes’ Workshop to Address Trade Trends

The assumption that trade conditions and infrastructure will drive future transportation changes will be the overriding theme at the sixth annual American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) “Shifting International Trade Routes” workshop in Tampa, Fla., Jan. 24-25, 2013. The 1½-day program, which is being cosponsored by the U.S. Maritime Administration and hosted by the Tampa Port Authority, will address the range of issues related to dynamic, global and hemispheric trade.

Clay Maitland, Chairman of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), announces two major events. NAMEPA’s Environmental Intelligence in Maritime Conference, will feature “Greening the Marine Transportation System”, “The Arctic”, “Safety at Sea” and “Corporate Risk Management”. This conference, with NAMEPA's fifth anniversary in mind, will be held on 14, November 2012, and is to be followed by NAMEPA’s 2012 Marine Environment Protection Awards honoring Maersk, NOAA, SUNY Maritime College, and the American Salvage Association (ASA).

APL ‘Cold-Irons’ Ships In Oakland To Clear The Air

APL flipped the switch today on a clean-air effort that’s part of California’s maritime future. The Singapore-based container shipping line became the first to shut down, or, “cold-iron,” a vessel’s engines to eliminate exhaust emissions at the Port of Oakland. APL Landmark $11M Clean Air Plan in Oakland

Global shipping leader APL and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced a landmark $11m project to cut vessel emissions and improve this city's air quality starting in 2010. Armed with $4.8m in air quality grants, the world's fifth-largest container carrier said it will retrofit its terminal and vessels to begin cold-ironing next December at the Port of Oakland. Cold-ironing is industry jargon for turning off a ship's 2,000 horsepower diesel generators at berth and connecting instead to electrical sources ashore. NOL Appoints Two Senior Managers

Neptune Orient Lines Ltd, (NOL) has hired two veteran officials at Sea-Land Service as senior executives in its container transportation arm, APL. Edward W. Aldridge, currently Senior Vice President for North America at Sea-Land will become President of APL's Americas Region. Daniel J. McHugh, currently Vice President of the Americas Division at Sea-Land, will become President of APL's Asia-Middle East Region. Tim Rhein, current President and CEO of APL Limited, will continue at the company in a broader capacity to be announced, according to Flemming R. Jacobs, President and Chief Executive Officer of NOL. Aldridge and McHugh round out the team of three senior regional executives at APL reporting to Jacobs.

New Directors Named at NOL

Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has appointed Ang Kong Hua and Willie Cheng Jue Hiang, to the Board of Directors, and confirmed Ron Widdows as CEO of its container transportation unit, APL. Ang Kong Hua becomes a Vice Chairman of the Board, joining Dr Friedbert Malt in this role, and will sit on both the Board’s Executive Committee and Nominating Committee. Willie Cheng Jue Hiang will serve on the Audit Committee in addition to his responsibilities as a member of the full Board. NOL Group Chairman Cheng Wai Keung said both Ang Kong Hua and Mr Willie Cheng offered a valuable breadth of skills and management experience in the global business arena. Mr Ang Kong Hua is President of NatSteel, a listed Singapore-based manufacturing group.
