ASRY Organizes Third Raft Race Competition

The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY) held its third annual Raft Race Competition on the ASRY Beach on Saturday, November 18, 2023.More than a hundred contestants from the company’s employees and subcontractors participated. In addition, SULB Bahrain took part in this year’s competition as a new member, with the participation of two teams.This sporting event, which aims to enhance social bonds, witnessed a wide audience, attended by water sports fans who showed their utmost support and encouragement for their favorite team.

In the 45 years since the Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) opened on reclaimed land in Bahrain, the Middle East has become one of the world’s ship repair hotspots. A broad range of shipyards now service both regional and global markets.Regional yards have a ready market, with hundreds of offshore rigs working across the region together with the service ships that support them. Then there are thousands of tankers and gas carriers that arrive each year to load energy cargoes for far-flung destinations.

ASRY Signs New Agent for Singapore, Hong Kong

ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard) signed a representation agreement with AMS to exclusively market ASRY’s products, services and facilities to the Singapore and Hong Kong shipping market, part of ASRY’s new management’s strategic re-alignment of its international agent’s network following the takeover of the National Oil and Gas Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain (NOGA) of Bahrain’s shares in the company last year.AMS has a network of four offices in Asia.

ASRY 2015 Strategy Combats Challenging Market

Up to May 2015, ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard), was seeing encouraging results from it’s 2015 strategy to combat the widespread challenges facing the maritime repair market, particularly shipowners reduced repair budgets. ASRY Signs New UK Agent

ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard), a shipyard in the Arabian Gulf, has signed a representation agreement with Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders Ltd (SRS) to exclusively market ASRY’s products, services and facilities to the U.K. shipping market. The move comes as part of ASRY’s strategic realignment of its agent network that has seen several new agents sign with ASRY recently. ASRY Inks UK Royal Navy Support Contract

ASRY and Babcock have signed a long term support facility agreement to provide ongoing services to the U.K. ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard), a shipyard in the Arabian Gulf, has signed a long-term collaborative enabling agreement with U.K. engineering support services company Babcock to undertake maintenance work on U.K. Royal Navy warships in the Gulf. The agreement will cover work from general maintenance to specific projects such as the changing of diesel generators under the Sandown Volvo Generator Program.

Indian Sailors Return Home after Five Month

Fourteen Indian troopers, who have been stranded on board an oil tanker off the coast of Bahrain since December have lastly left for home, says a report in Gulf Daily news. They were among the 16-member crew of Mongolian vessel MT Surya Kuber, which was banned from leaving the country because its Singapore-based owner 7Seas Ship Management allegedly owed Asry and Kanoo Shipping more than $220,000. In December, the vessel arrived in Bahrain for repairs, but was subsequently detained after refusing to pay Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) for their services. An official court ruling in Bahrain was handed down in February banning the vessel from leaving until all debts have been settled after ASRY initiated legal action against 7Seas Ship management.

Last last year Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) appointed Nils Kristian Berge acting Chief Executive  to succeed Chris Potter. As ASRY is a driving force in the key Middle East ship repair and offshore markets, Maritime Reporter spent some time with Berge for his insights on the ship repair market in general, as well as ASRY specific initiatives for the coming year. You replace Chris Potter, who obviously had a long and notable career. What are the top challenges and advantages going forward? ASRY Repairs 4,000th Ship

Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY), said it has recently achieved a milestone with the repair of its 4,000th ship. The vessel, the Gas Al Gurain, is an LPG Tanker owned by Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) one of ASRY’s longest standing customers. ASRY, established in 1977, noted that reaching the 4,000-ship mark was achieved in part thanks to some of the world most prestigious fleets, including KOTC, Maersk, UASC, Odfjell MidEast and many more. Installation of a new Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system, exhaust gas economizer which utilizes the heat energy from diesel generators.

ASRY: Bucking the Slowdown Trend

By all accounts, Bahrain-based ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard) is managing to buck the trend of falling revenues and create an optimistic story for the Middle East ship repair industry. It is also resisting the regional trend of falling revenues and increased losses with a 6% increase year-on-year in revenues as well as staying profitable, according to the yard. ASRY Invests in Future

Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) has come a long way since starting operations towards the end of 1977, as the Arabian Gulf’s first VLCC repair yard. Today ASRY is involved in the repair of all types of commercial vessels, naval craft and offshore jack-up rigs. It also has an expanding newbuilding division which has built specialist barges as well as completing four new tugs for its own use. Fire-damaged Tankship 'Stolt Valor' to be Scrapped

Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (Asry) CEO says repair of the tankship was found not to be viable Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (Asry) chief executive Chris Potter told 'Gulf Daily News', "It was felt that the cost of repair would be much more than the cost of the vessel." He said the vessel could be broken apart in Bahrain and then taken away. "We could also have ship-breaking experts coming to Bahrain to examine the vessel and decide on breaking it up." The tanker, which suffered an explosion after a fire in March, had at one point threatened Bahrain's coastline. It arrived in Asry last month in convoy with the help of three large tugs. The cause of the original explosion is still unknown.

ASRY Accepts Damaged Vessel Challenge

The 2004-built, 25,268dwt Liberian-flag chemical tanker Stolt Valor, has arrived at Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) for repairs, following a fire and explosion in one of her cargo tanks while transiting the Arabian Gulf on 15 March this year. Stolt Valor arrived at ASRY in convoy with the three large tugs: 1,797grt Anchor Handling Tug/Supply vessel Caribbean Fos, owned by Greece’s Five Oceans Salvage; the 450grt tug  Pacific Typhoon, owned by Swire Pacific Ltd and the 1,290grt Anchor Handling Tug/Supply vessel Lamnalco Mesite, owned by Smit Lamnalco Ltd, Cyprus.

Stricken Liberian Tanker Finds Refuge in Bahrain

The General Organization of Sea Ports (GOP) said that the Liberian vessel -- MV Stolt Valor -- was granted permission to take refuge in Bahrain’s waters. The operation to move the tanker to the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) began early on Tuesday June 26, 2012), where the ASRY team began preparing it for its onward journey. Bahrein Shipyard Signs Maersk Ship-Repair Deal

Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) signs a long-term contract to repair Maersk vessels on preferential terms With 35  years experience in the shipbuilding and repair business, ASRY will repair Maersk ships operating in the Persian Gulf as required. In 2011 the yard repaired nine Maersk ships. Commenting on this agreement, Chief Executive Officer, of the ASRY Group Chris Potter, said: "I am very pleased to welcome Maersk company in the growing list of our customers."

The Kingdom of Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) has turned in a profitable first quarter of 2012 despite the continued shipping recession and increased competition in the region. As of the beginning of May ASRY was running at close to capacity and had work in hand for the next 12 weeks. This, says CEO Chris Potter, is quite some achievement in a region which already has plenty of repair capacity, even before two major new repair facilities opened for business recently in Qatar and Oman.

ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Power Barge Market: ASRY, Centrax Debut New Systems

Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) has joined forces with UK-based power generation packaging specialist Centrax, to form a joint venture company ASRY-Centrax Ltd, to design and build Power Barges – essentially floating electricity generating power stations. ASRY has designed the barges itself, and will build them on its two large slipways. The initial design is the TPB125 Power Barge, a 125MWe unit based on a standard barge design and outfitted with a pair of Rolls-Royce Trent 60 gas turbines, selling for between $100 to $125 million based on final outfitting factors such as security systems, and the need for amenities such as night vision equipment and helidecks, for example.

While Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) is an established power in the ship repair business, it had traditionally not engaged in the business of ship and boat building. “The very simple answer, really, is that we have found there is more money to be made repairing ships than building them,” said Chris Potter, Chief Executive Officer, ASRY. ASRY is, however, capable, and is building a series of four new tugs for itself on its large slipways, with the lead vessel, as yet unnamed, due for delivery by the end of 2011.
