ABB Turbocharging Tops Industry Efficiency Benchmark

ABB Turbocharging has raised the industry benchmark for low-speed turbocharging efficiency to achieve an additional turbocharger efficiency increase of 2 percent by performing the measurement on an actual engine on an engine testbed. As a performance yardstick for low-speed turbochargers, the industry applies the turbocharger effi-ciency benchmark given by MAN Diesel & Turbo, a leading global low-speed engine designer. ABB Tur-bocharging has now proven an exceptional 2% higher efficiency compared to this industry standard. The ABB turbocharging efficiency benchmark test took place earlier this year on a Hyundai testbed in Korea. Three ABB latest generation A180-L turbochargers…

ABB Improves Efficiency of World’s Largest Ships

MSC Oscar (Photo courtesy of ABB)

ABB has designed turbochargers powering the largest ships in the world. First came the China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) Globe with capacity of 19,100 TEU completing its maiden voyage in February 2015. This was followed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Oscar at 19,224 TEU. Both have engines incorporating ABB-designed turbochargers and are each the first of a series of vessels to launch in the coming months also featuring turbochargers designed by ABB. The largest vessels of any type in service…

ABB Turbochargers for Largest Boxships

ABB has designed turbochargers powering the largest ships in the world. First came the China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) Globe with capacity of 19,100 TEU completing its maiden voyage in February 2015. This was followed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Oscar at 19,224 TEU. Both have engines incorporating ABB-designed turbochargers and are each the first of a series of vessels to launch in the coming months also featuring turbochargers designed by ABB. The largest vessels of any type in service, the CSCL Globe and MSC Oscar are the only container ships in operation with capacity of over 19,000 TEU. In addition to their design, which allows this record-breaking cargo capacity, they host the largest engines on any ship.

ABB's New Turbocharger: 'A Quantum Technology Leap'

ABB Turbocharging unveil its new A200-L generation of single-stage turbochargers for low-speed two-stroke engines. The A200-L’s compressor stage has been optimized to enable significantly more additional volume flow. In comparison to previous models, the A200-L has up to 30% additional volume flow, which to date is fully the equivalent to one size smaller in a series of turbochargers. According to ABB this increase represents a quantum leap never before seen in the turbocharging industry. In effect, the power density of the turbocharger compared to other models is significantly higher. The turbocharger is often one of the heavier components to service on a ship, so the A200-L’s lighter design also makes it much easier to maintain.

ABB: Dual Rating Configuration for A100-L

ABB Turbocharging reported two achievements with turbochargers from the A100 family. The first A100 achievement is a new efficiency record. In final testing of the A190-L turbocharger for two -stroke low speed diesels, ABB technicians measured peak efficiency at 75.8%. “The 75.8% figure is all the more impressive because it was measured on a turbocharger featuring a higher pressure ratio than the model that achieved the previous record figure,” said Urs Gribi, Vice President of Engineering at the Baden, Switzerland headquarters of ABB Turbocharging.
