NYK's New LPG Dual-fuel VLGC Named Lupinus Planet

On September 2, a naming ceremony was held at Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new very large gas carrier (VLGC) that NYK will charter to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company Astomos Energy Corporation.At the ceremony, the ship was named Lupinus Planet by Toru Araki, executive vice president at Astomos Energy Corporation, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. Yuji Nishijima, NYK executive Officer, attended together with others from NYK.This vessel will be NYK‘s first liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel VLGC.

NYK Participates in Marine Biofuel Study

Japanese shipping company NYK said it is working with compatriot liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) trader Astomos Energy Corporation for a marine biofuel demonstration project launched by the Global Center for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD), a non-profit organization aiming to promote decarbonization of the maritime industry.While biofuels generate CO2 when combusted, they are considered carbon-neutral because they are made from plants and waste cooking oil. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. held a naming ceremony at Sakaide Shipyard for the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-fueled LPG carrier Crystal Asteria, which is being built for Kumiai Navigation (Pte) Ltd.The 229.9-meter newbuild is Japan's first dual-fuel LPG carrier, capable of running on both LPG and low-sulphur fuel oil. A naming ceremony was held in Kumamoto Prefecture at the Ariake Shipyard of Japan Marine United Corporation for a new VLGC (very large gas carrier) that NYK will charter under a long-term contract to Astomos Energy Corporation,  pre-eminent liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company.The ship was named “Lily Promenade” by Kazuhisa Otsuka, senior operating officer of Astomos Energy Corporation, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by Mariko Kurokawa of Astomos.

Canada Makes First Propane Shipment

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co.held a christening ceremony for a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier currently under construction for Astomos Energy Corporation. The christening ceremony was held at the Koyagi Plant of MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works for the ship named “Laurel Prime” by Seiya Araki, president of Astomos Energy Corporation.NYK has traditionally given LPG carriers two-word names that begin with the letters “L” and “P” respectively. Astomos and Elgas to Study LPG as Shipping Fuel

Tokyo-based Astomos Energy Corporation and , Australia’s leading LPG marketer and distributor have signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) for the further study of LPG as a ship bunker fuel(LPG bunkering). LPG bunkering is a possible solution to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) shipping fuels SOx limit of 0.5% from 2020. This MOU will enhance cooperation between Astomos and Elgas across all aspects of LPG bunkering including the sharing of information, research and development and collaboration in securing global supply sites for LPG bunkering within the Asia Pacific. Over the past few years Astomos and Elgas have developed a strong business relationship in the field of seaborne LPG trading.

LPG Carrier Makes First Commercial Transit through Expanded Panama Canal

On June 27, the expanded Panama Canal opened for commercial transit, and Lycaste Peace, a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier operated by NYK, was the first vessel to complete a commercial passage through the new locks. On June 26, the Panama Canal Authority held an inauguration ceremony for the expanded canal. The maximum dimensions of a vessel transiting the canal have been expanded to 366 meters in overall length, 49 meters in breadth, and 15.2 meters of draft. In 1914, the NYK-operated Tokushima Maru was the first Japanese-flagged vessel to pass through the canal, and over the 100-plus years since then, NYK and the Republic of Panama have maintained an important partnership. Lycaste Peace transports LPG procured in the U.S.

NYK and Astomos Conclude Time-charter Contract for 12th VLGC

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK)  concluded a time-charter contract for a new VLGC (very large gas carrier) with Astomos Energy Corporation, the world's pre-eminent liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company. The new VLGC will be built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. and delivered in the fourth quarter of 2018. After delivery, the ship will be assigned to a service designated in a five-year time-charter contract, and NYK and Astomos will then have 12 VLGCs in operation under time-charter contracts. Astomos is looking to increase LPG handling volume from the current 10 million tons/year to 12 million tons/year by 2017. The company plays an important role in the LPG business field…

First LPG Carrier Order for MHI Shipbuilding

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), announced it has received an order from Astomos Energy Corporation for a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. The order marks the very first to be received by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding since the company's launch on October 1. The LPG carrier on order is identical to the four vessels Astomos Energy has already ordered to MHI since 2013. According to the builder, the ship will provide a high level of energy-saving performance, flexibility to accommodate major LPG terminals around the globe and specifications suited to passage through the newly expanding Panama Canal. Completion and delivery are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018.

Panama Canal Delegates Meet with Japanese Customers

A Panama Canal delegation headed by Administrator Jorge L. Quijano visited Japan to hold discussions with the Japan Shipowners’ Association (JSA) and the major Japanese shipping lines, as well as end customers such as Japanese car manufacturers and energy sector companies. “The Panama Canal strives to have face-to-face meetings with our customer base,” Quijano said. Japan is among the top five user nations of the Panama Canal, as a major importer of grains from the U.S. Gulf Coast and exporter of vehicles to the North American consumer market.
