Canadian Coast Guard's Massive Fleet Renewal Underway
As part of the Government's investment in its Coast Guard fleet, Federal Ministers Gail Shea and Rob Moore announce the award of a $1.2 million contract to St. John’s Dockyard Limited for Vessel Life Extension (VLE) and refit work to Canadian Coast Guard vessel 'CCGS Cygnus', . In the unprecedented investment to the Canadian Coast Guard’s fleet renewal program allocated in Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government will extend the lives of sixteen Coast Guard vessels and complete mid-life modernizations on an additional two existing hovercraft over the next 10 years.
Arctic Standards Development Moves Ahead
Improving and updating Arctic design standards for material, equipment, and offshore structures for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. CFOA Showcases Ferry Sector’s Role in Canadian Economy
Today marked the conclusion of the Canadian Ferry Operators Association (CFOA) annual AGM and Conference in St. John’s, NL. The theme of CFOA 2013 was Innovative Approaches to Customer Relations, and the two-day conference featured presentations on enhancing customer relations, informative technical sessions as well as a trade show with exhibits from some of the world’s leading ferry sector suppliers. “CFOA 2013 was an unqualified success,” said Serge Buy, CEO of CFOA. CFOA 2013 also featured the release of a report highlighting the socio-economic importance of the ferry sector in Canada, as well as addresses by the Hon. Irving Engages Suppliers on AOPS Opportunities
More than 530 potential suppliers from across Canada gathered in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 for Irving Shipbuilding’s AOPS Supplier Development Session. Dynamic Positioning in Ice Research Project Gets Green Light
Kongsberg Maritime DP and simulation systems provide foundation for improving ice operations. The final piece of a CAD $8.5 million research project to improve DP operations in ice fell into place on May 23, 2012 when the Government of Canada announced a contribution of $3.2 million to the project from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Led by long-time Kongsberg Maritime simulator customer CMS – the Centre for Marine Simulation (Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University), the five-year research project aims to improve the safety and efficiency of oil and gas operations in ice environments by improving dynamic positioning (DP) system technologies for operations in ice.
Rolls Royce to Lead Canadian Naval Research Project
An award of $3 million from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) funds the project. The development of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) is a rapidly expanding part of naval marine technology, and Rolls-Royce has extensive capability in the handling systems that enable these advanced craft to be launched, refuelled and recovered from the sea. Rolls-Royce will develop automated systems to support the missions carried out by unmanned naval vehicles, including mine-countermeasures, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, coastal security patrols and environmental data collection. Inside the Atlantic Canada Shipbuilding Action Plan
In a bid to inform small and medium sized companies to tap into Atlantic Canada's $33-billion naval fleet renewal, the Government has launched the Atlantic Shipbuilding Action Plan, a long-term strategy that will facilitate the integration of Atlantic Canadian enterprises, including the construction of the Navy’s combat vessels by Irving Shipbuilding of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Plan will evolve as necessary to ensure it continues to address the ongoing needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in Atlantic Canada and their requirement for skilled workers.
