Trojan Marinex BWTS Selected for Damen PSVs
Trojan Marinex announced that Damen Shipyards have selected the Trojan Marinex Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system for a fleet of Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) it is building for Atlantic Towing Limited – a Canadian-owned marine transportation company. “It’s been an exciting year for us,” said Marv DeVries, president, Trojan Technologies. “Our entire product suite achieved IMO Type Approval in March, AMS acceptance in August, and we are on course for U.S. Coast Guard Type Approval.

Ulstein Verft subsea newbuild Island Performer was built for Island Offshore to be a flexible, RLWI/IMR vessel, destined to serve its first five years for FTO in the Gulf of Mexico. “The vessel is customized to suit the scope of work in the FTO contract, in which RLWI (Riser-less Light Well Intervention) and IMR (Inspection/Maintenance/Repair) are the main tasks. Jaya Delivers Vessel to Atlantic Towing
Offshore energy services provider, Jaya Holdings Limited, has delivered its second newbuild ice class anchor handling tug supply vessel to Canadian buyers, Atlantic Towing Limited. The 16,000-BHP vessel was delivered on February 7, 2014 in Singapore and was christened the Atlantic Merlin at a naming ceremony held earlier today. She was previously known as Jaya Sovereign until her delivery to Atlantic Towing. Atlantic Merlin is a sister ship of Atlantic Kestrel, which was delivered to Atlantic Towing in November 2012. Sheshashayee added, “This delivery begins another busy period for us and is the first of four new buildings for Jaya in 2014 and the other three ships will be operated in Jaya’s growing fleet.
Jaya Reports $46.1 Million Full Year Net Profit
Jaya Holdings Limited reported consolidated revenue of $201.8 million and net profit of $46.1 million for the financial year ended 30 June 2013. The group’s total revenue for the financial year under review was $201.8 million, 145% higher than the previous financial year. The increase in the group’s revenue was due to increased vessel sales and improved charter utilization. The Offshore Support Services (OSS) Division’s higher revenue for the financial year under review was due to improved utilization of 80% compared to 70% a year ago.
Atlantic Towing Expands Fleet
St. John’s NL - Atlantic Towing Limited (ATL), a global marine service provider based in Atlantic Canada, has announced the addition of the Atlantic Raven – a 14,400 hp UT 722 Offshore Supply Vessel. The Raven is the second offshore supply vessel to be added to the ATL fleet this year. The 75m x 18m vessel, with four diesel engines and an oil recovery system will further support ATL’s existing and future contracts for customers in the offshore exploration and production industry. “Our customer base is growing and this acquisition is part of our strategy to grow with them,” said Wayne Power, Vice President of Irving Transportation Services. The vessel will arrive in St. John’s Newfoundland on August 5th to begin work in the North Atlantic.

New Rolls-Royce OSV for Canada
Rolls-Royce has won an order to design and equip a UT 755LN offshore support vessel with an integrated power, propulsion and motion control system, for use in the Canadian oil and gas market. Atlantic Towing Limited (Canada) has entered a long term charter with the Canadian oil and gas company EnCana Corporation for the vessel which will be built at the Halifax Shipyard in Nova Scotia. It will operate in the Deep Panuk field off the Canadian east coast. In addition to the ship design, Rolls-Royce will deliver a fully integrated equipment system. This includes diesel engines, propellers, reduction gears, tunnel thrusters, azimuth thrusters, steering gear, rudders, switchboards, automation and controls and deck machinery. The total value of the Rolls-Royce contract is around $10.5m.
Specialties Cornerstone of Canadian Market
The past decade was a tough one for the Canadian shipbuilding market. It was a decade that produced a decline of both employment and decline of newbuilds, many of which were contracted in the late 1980s still awaiting construction. This unfinished business was concentrated mostly on various military projects that had been thought out but were never actually followed through. It is estimated that by the time the 1990's came to a close that Canadian yards had experienced the worst decade since postwar times with total sales declining by about 50 percent since 1991. In addition, total employment in the industry has broken off by about 50 percent from 12,000 workers in 1990 to today's figure of 5,000.
East Isle Shipyard Secures $21 Million Contract
East Isle Shipyard, Prince Edward Island's largest shipbuilder, has secured a $21 million contract to construct two new tug boats for customers in the Dominican Republic as well as a third tug for Atlantic Towing, Limited. The new contract means employment for 120 shipyard workers. The shipyard had been idle since September of 2002 when a fourth tug for the Panama Canal Authority was completed.
