Austal and Birdon Ink Landing Craft MOU

Shipbuilding groups Austal and Birdon announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop defense shipbuilding capability in Western Australia to deliver the Australian Department of Defense Landing Craft-Medium (LC-M) Project.The formation of the MOU commenced in late November when Minister for Defense Industry, Hon. Pat Conroy, announced a Heads of Agreement (HOA) to establish a Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) between Austal and the Commonwealth, and named Austal as the preferred vessel constructor.

Shipbuilding group Austal announced its Austal Australia division has delivered the 18th Guardian-class Patrol Boat (GCPB) to the Australian Department of Defense. Australian shipbuilding group Austal announced its Austal Australia arm has delivered the 17th Guardian-class Patrol Boat (GCPB) to the Australian Department of Defense. Austal to Build Two More Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats for Australian Navy

The Australian Department of Defense will order an additional two Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats (ECCPB’s) for the Royal Australian Navy from shipbuilder Austal for $124 million. The two new vessels are in addition to the six Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats that are currently being delivered by Austal Australia for the Royal Australian Navy.The announcement was made during a visit by Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, to Austal's Henderson Western Australia shipyard.

Australian Navy Saves Jellyfish Sting Victim

A rapid response by Royal Australian Navy patrol boat HMAS Pirie’s crew may have saved the life of a crew member onboard an Australian fishing vessel, the Australian Department of Defense announced. The Armidale Class patrol boat was conducting border protection operations when the ship received an urgent call for assistance from a fishing vessel stating a Darwin resident was believed to have been stung by a highly venomous Box Jellyfish, (Chironex fleckeri) while recovering nets near Bigge Island in the Kimberley region.

Australia’s New Icebreaker Unveiled

The Australian Government has provided the first look at Australia’s new icebreaker, a ship it says will offer scientists unprecedented and extended access to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. Navy Member Dies at Australian Defence Cycling Carnival

The Australian Department of Defense confirmed that a male Navy competitor has died today following a tragic accident while participating in the Australian Defense Cycling Club (ADCC) 2013 Cycling Carnival at Mount Stromlo in Canberra.   The accident occurred at 2:25pm Friday, October 11. Medical staff were in attendance and immediately administered first aid.   The member was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to Canberra Hospital where he was pronounced dead.   The member’s family has been notified and is receiving all appropriate support services.   The Navy extends its sincerest condolences to the member’s family and his friends following this very sad and tragic accident.

High Power Phased Array Radar Development

The Australian Department of Defense released a request for tender to CEA Technologies for the development of a High Power Phased Array Radar concept demonstrator. CEA Technologies Pty Ltd is a Canberra-based company whose CEAFAR radar is being fitted to the ANZAC Class Frigates of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as part of the ANZAC Class Anti-Ship Missile Defense Upgrade project. “This tender is for the development of radar systems based on the CEAFAR radar which could support future naval acquisitions such as the Royal Australian Navy’s Future Frigates through Project SEA 5000,” Minister for Defense Materiel Dr. Mike Kelly AM MP said. The CEAFAR radar is a focus of the Phased Array Radar element of the High Frequency and Phased Array Radar Priority Industry Capability (PIC).

Juneau Focuses On Protecting Great Barrier Reef

In preparation for Talisman Saber 2007 (TS07), Sailors and embarked Marines aboard USS Juneau (LPD 10) are learning environmental protection measures to safely preserve Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The main operating area for the exercise -- which will bring together nearly 32,000 U.S.-Australian forces for training -- is in Shoalwater Bay Training Area. The 1,000 square mile area near the Barrier Reef has a high environmental value. The area is administered by the Australian Army to ensure sound environmental practices are observed.

Rolls-Royce and Kellogg Brown & Root Sign Contract with Australian DoD

A Rolls-Royce and Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) team has signed a contract with the Australian Department of Defense worth more than $39m. The contract covers four Royal Australian Navy amphibious and afloat support ships for seven years with options for a further five. The Rolls-Royce and KBR team will reduce DoD ship costs through improved logistics management, total ship maintenance, faster response to day-to-day engineering issues and managing equipment obsolescence.
