Italian Navy Launches Offshore Patrol Ship

GE Marine's LM2500+G4 gas turbine will  power the Italian Navy’s new Paolo Thaon di Revel Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) a hybrid-electric, multipurpose offshore patrol ship that was launched in mid-June and will be delivered in 2021.Being built at Fincantieri Shipyard in Muggiano – La Spezia, Italy, the PPA patrol ship will serve multiple functions from patrol with sea rescue capacity to civil protection operations. It is 133 meters long and can carry 90 crew members with additional accommodations for up to 171 members.

GE Powers New Italian Frigate

Federico Martinengo, the seventh multipurpose FREMM frigate recently delivered to the Italian Navy by shipyard Fincantieri, like all 10 ships in the new Carlos Bergamini-class FREMM frigate program, features the power dense GE LM2500+G4 gas turbine in a COmbined Diesel eLectric And Gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion system.In 2013, Fincantieri delivered the first Italian FREMM, Carlo Bergamini. In addition to the Italian FREMM frigates, DCNS shipyard in Lorient, France, is well underway having delivered six FREMM frigates in a 10-ship program.

GE’s Marine Solutions has announced that the seventh multi-purpose Italian FREMM frigate Federico Martinengo, was launched on March 4. The ceremony was held at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso shipyard in Genoa, Italy. GE Gas Turbine to Power Italian Navy Patrol Ship

GE’s Marine Solutions announced it will provide a LM2500+G4 gas turbine that will power the Italian Navy’s new Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose offshore patrol ship. The PPA’s hybrid electric propulsion system also will use GE’s shock-proof MV3000 drives and a GE-designed electrical network of motors as part of the propulsion system. Avio Aero, a GE Aviation business headquartered in Italy, will have the design responsibility for the gas turbine package. The PPA ship will be built by Fincantieri at its Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano.

GE Inks Turbine Service Deal for Fastest Commercial Ship

GE Marine announced it will provide Buquebus, Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a customized service agreement for the two GE LM2500 gas turbines aboard the Francisco fast ferry. The 10-year agreement provides for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for the dual fuel gas turbines that power the world’s fastest commercial ship. “We worked closely with Buquebus to fashion a gas turbine maintenance agreement that would meet their specific needs and ensure reliable operation of this very popular fast ferry,” said Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations, GE Marine, Evendale, Ohio.

GE Gas Turbine to Power Italian Frigate

GE Marine has received an order to supply one LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine to Avio Aero of Turin, Italy, a GE Aviation business. The gas turbine will power the Italian Navy’s eighth FREMM frigate. Through Avio Aero, at least 17 LM2500+G4 gas turbines are expected to provide propulsion for the Italian-French-Moroccan FREMM program, which includes eight ships each for the Italian and French navies and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy. Other international navies are considering the FREMM frigate for use in their fleets.

Through Avio Aero, at least 18 LM2500+G4 gas turbines will provide propulsion for the Italian-French FREMM program, which includes six ships for the Italian Navy, 11 ships for the French Navy, and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy. Other international navies are considering the FREMM frigate for use in their fleets.

GE Delivers Gas Turbine to Avio for French Navy Vessel

GE Marine has delivered one LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine to Avio S.p.A. of Turin, Italy, a GE Marine System Supplier. The gas turbine will power the French Navy’s eighth FREMM frigate Lorraine. The Italian-French FREMM program marks the first application in the marine sector of GE’s LM2500+G4 gas turbine, which has 17% more power than its LM2500+ predecessor. Through Avio, 18 LM2500+G4 gas turbines will provide propulsion for the current FREMM program, which includes six ships for the Italian Navy, 11 ships for the French Navy, and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy.

GE delivers two LM2500+G4 marine gas turbines to Avio for French and Italian FREMM frigates. GE Marine has delivered two LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbines to Avio S.p.A. of Turin, Italy, a GE Marine System Supplier. The gas turbines will power the Italian and French Navy’s fifth and seventh FREMM frigates, respectively. The first French Navy frigate Aquitaine of the Italian-French FREMM program was launched in December 2010 at DCNS’ shipyard in Lorient, France. The first Italian Navy FREMM Bergamini was launched in June 2011.

GE Gas Turbines on Euro Frigate

GE Marine reports that the first frigate Aquitaine of the Italian-French FREMM program was recently launched at DCNS’ shipyard in Lorient, France. The ship is powered by the GE LM2500+G4 gas turbine-based propulsion system. Aquitaine sea trials were successfully completed in May 2011. Construction continues on the first Italian Navy FREMM Bergamini, with initial start of the LM2500+G4 gas turbine propulsion system expected within the next few months. GE LM2500+G4 Earns Three Certifications

GE Marine reports it has completed a gas turbine engine qualification testing program for its LM2500+G4 marine aeroderivative gas turbines. As a result, the engine is now certified by three key organizations: Bureau Veritas, RINA S.p.A., and American Bureau of Shipping (Naval Vessel Rules). “To meet engine qualification requirements for the LM2500+G4, GE devised a rigorous testing program that was approved by all three key organizations,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager.

GE Marine reports that the first LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine module has been delivered by Avio to DCNS’ shipyard in . The engine will be the basis for the COmbined Diesel eLectric And Gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion system that will power the French Navy’s first European Multi-Mission Frigates (FREMM) ship. Avio, , is a GE Marine Systems Supplier, as well as the prime contractor for the FREMM gas turbine system. The French and Italian Navies are jointly developing the FREMM program, and combined, the navies are slated to build a total of 27 next-generation frigates.

The engine will be the basis for the COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion module that will power the French Navy’s second FREMM ship. The French and Italian Navies are jointly developing the FREMM program, and combined, the navies are slated to build a total of 27 next-generation frigates. GE has already contracted with Avio to supply two LM2500+G4 gas turbines for the initial two FREMM vessels.

GE Powers Polish Navy

GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbine will be used to power the Polish Navy’s next generation Type 621 corvette, to be named Gawron. The LM2500 gas turbine will be applied in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration, with two diesel engines. GE’s LM2500 gas turbine currently powers the Polish Navy’s Gen. K. Pulawski frigate. The gas turbine for the Gawron will be manufactured at GE Marine’s Evendale, Ohio facility. The LM2500 will be placed into a propulsion module by Avio of Torino, Italy. Avio, a GE partner, will also design and supply the LM2500 module electronic control system. The new corvette will be built by Poland’s Gdynia Shipyard, Warsaw, Poland. Installation of the gas turbine module is slated for June 2008.
